PUP found with Adwcleaner "Torch" , what is this?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, would like to thank you ahead of time for any assistance with this topic. I ran a scan with Adwcleaner and it found 12 threats. They were under PUP.Optional.Torch and I'm unsure as to what this is or how in the world it got on my pc. I never downloaded a Torch file or browser. I'm a Windows 7 user on chrome. I ran a Malwarebytes scan right before the Adwcleaner one and Malwarebytes didn't find these threats. Not sure why but glad they were caught though. I'm just wondering if there was a reason Malwarebytes didn't pick them up and what they are? I'm guessing some type of browser hijacker possibly but would like an expert opinion. These are the malicious files below :

PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.jpg\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.bmp\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.dib\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.mfp\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ico\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.jpe\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.jfif\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.URL\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.png\OpenWithList\Torch.exe
PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.webm\OpenWithList\Torch.exe

PUP.Optional.Torch              HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.gif\OpenWithList\Torch.exe

Thanks again for any help...Best regards :)

Greetings,

I believe Torch is a web browser; one that is known to often be bundled with potentially unwanted software such as unnecessary browser toolbars and search engines.  It is up to you whether or not to keep it, however if you did not install it on the system then it may have come bundled with some other software you installed previously and you may have ADWCleaner remove it if you wish.
