can someone please clarify

hi guys,

can someone please clarify if MB is also an anti virus or not?

as i had BULLGUARD but when re downloading it from their site to

install on new pc it started to make my pc restart every halk hour!

so i uninstalled pronto and no problems since!

very alarming!!!

can you guys recommend a good AV if Malwarebytes is not one please ?

MBAM is not an Antivirus!

Doesn't have the capabilities of an Antivirus, regardless how is advertised on Malwarebytes site.

So, get a good antivirus (not very sophisticated because will conflict one way or another with MBAM) and add MBAM paid.

From my own experience of over 5 years running MBAM, I can say that I did not see any benefit running it on top of a good antivirus.

What I am running now , very table is Win7 64bit +MSE 4.10.209 (as my antivirus) + MBAM paid (but Web protection off) + PC Tools Firewall Plus (as firewall) (add all required exceptions)

If you do not like PC Tools, you can use Windows Firefall Controll from Binisoft (is free now, is an interface for Windows firewall)

As browser  Firefox + Malwarebytes extension (is free) + ublock origin

I had good results with ESET as antivirus , also Bitdefender free.

Lock is quite correct in that Malwarebytes is definitely not an antivirus.  With that said, what Malwarebytes is (and is marketed as) is an antivirus replacement by which I mean the layers of protection it provides are a substitute/replacement for the protection provided by an antivirus.  This is because modern threats (none of which are true computer viruses and haven't been for several years now) change so rapidly that attempting to use hash based detection methods and massive databases of individual samples to provide protection is pointless.  The threats change too fast and too much of what they do does not rely on files at all (especially exploits and file-less malware, both of which have become quite common), so instead, Malwarebytes relies on a combination of technologies to protect systems against the methods and mechanisms employed by modern threats, and while they do still have more traditional threat signatures as well, they do not rely on this layer as much as the majority of AVs and many other security products do because they prefer a more proactive approach to protection.  You can learn more about the various layers of defense in Malwarebytes and how they work to protect your system by reviewing the information found on this page.

However, as it has always been, Malwarebytes is still designed to be compatible with an active antivirus so if you choose to use one as Lock recommends then you should be just fine.  As far as software firewalls are concerned, if you desire outbound blocking then you may use one of the softwares recommended by Lock along with a few other choices which are also free and also use the same Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) technology built into modern Windows versions which is the same framework the Windows Firewall in those operating systems is built on.  I've listed several of them below, including Binisoft as Lock suggested:

• Malwarebytes Binisoft Windows Firewall Control
• Windows 10 Firewall Control (they have a free version there which is completely adequate in my opinion and it's what I myself use and have used for years, ever since the days of Windows Vista)
• Windows Firewall Notifier
• TinyWall
• Simplewall
• Free Firewall
  

The Malwarebytes browser extension beta that was mentioned is also currently available for free and can be found at the following links:

i agree the threats change so fast that most AV are quite ineffective to match the pace

of crap out there.im going to get MB full and kaspersky free...

i had Bullguard that i thought was ok but i think their AV has been exploited(read my initial post)

I think that's a good choice.  While we obviously don't promote any particular AV around here, I will say that I know from personal experience that Kaspersky is among the top vendors in the industry when it comes to their detection rates.  They, like Malwarebytes, also don't rely strictly on signatures either and their products tend to include more proactive mechanisms of protection beyond standard threat detection signatures so using the two together should provide ample protection.
