Malwarebytes wont open in Windows 10 (sometimes)

Recommended Posts

Hello

I have anew lenovo ideapad and and have loaded avg and malwarebtyes (both paid versions). In the antivirus and threat section of windows 10 it shows a green checkmark for avg and malwarebytes and says "no action needed " for both. I am using Chrome as a browser. I have no reason believe I have a virus because sometimes when I turn on the computer I can open malwaybytes and run a scan, and other times I cant. Even when I cant open it I assume it is running based on the "no action required" and green check mark in Windows.

What can I do to stop whatever conflict is happening and make sure I can open malwarebytes whenever I want..

thx

Greetings,

To start, it's possible that this may be caused by a feature in Windows 10 called Fast Startup.  You can check by disabling it as instructed here as well as on this page.  If Fast Startup was enabled, try disabling that first, then reboot your computer and see if Malwarebytes now functions normally.

If it does not, then the problem could be compatibility with AVG and you might need to enter exclusions in one program or both for the other.  The items to exclude from AVG's scanning and protection can be found here and to exclude AVG's files and processes from Malwarebytes you will need to use the instructions in the Exclude a File or Folder section of this support article.

If that did not resolve the issue, then it would be best to provide us with some more details about your system and Malwarebytes installation.  To do so, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced Options on the main page (not Get Started)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Please let us know how it goes and if necessary, provide the ZIP file mentioned above.

Thanks

The first thing suggested worked - disabling faststart in windows worked (and has stayed working except once). But I will try exile's suggestion of disabling the fake website shield in AVG. If that seems ok I guess I should turn faststart back on so I can have a better idea which of the two solutions is helping with the fix.. Thx all...

Sounds good, process of elimination to determine the culprit :)

Given the intermittent nature I'm betting on Fast Startup being the primary cause, and it's possible that either you don't have the most recent update for AVG that causes the issue or that for some reason it's not interfering with Malwarebytes on your system the way it has others so far, but you never know until you test.

Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks
