Rootkit?

Recommended Posts

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a 64 bit desktop.  While trying to perform some scans, Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit Beta v1.09.3.1001 failed to scan and gave me this error message:  "The system volume seems inaccessible or encrypted."  I tried rebooting and installed the latest updates, but no luck.  Since I have Malwarebytes Free Version 2.2.1.1043, I tried enabling rootkit detection.  But the scan failed and displayed an error message which read "Error:  Malwarebytes is unable to load the Anti-Rootkit Driver.  Error code:20026.  Do you want to continue the scan without anti-rootkit support?"  Upon completion of the scan, I got another message:  "SDK Scanning Error:  20026".

Searching the forum archives for that error code found cases where turning off Bitlocker resolved the issue, but I don't have that program.  I don't have any encryption enabled and even tried temporarily disabling Avast to see if there was a conflict.  There wasn't and I'm wondering if some sort of rootkit or other infection is to blame.

Also, does attaching scan logs make them visible to everyone or can only moderators access them?

Hello Crimsoncricket and welcome to Malwarebytes,

All members will see your logs. There are hundreds of logs posted here every week, same at other similar forum. I would not be concerned about what your logs show...

Follow the instructions at this link and post the requested logs: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/9573-im-infected-what-do-i-do-now/

Thank you,

Kevin

Thanks for those logs Crimsoncricket,

Continue with the following:

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into. "Do not open that file when running FRST fix"
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Open FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

RogueKiller is a powerful tool. So, it is preferable that a helper checks the scan results to avoid potential false positives removal...
Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop, ensure to download correct version..

RogueKiller (X86)

RogueKiller (x64)

  • Exit all running applications.
  • Double-click on RogueKiller.exe to launch the tool. On its first execution, RogueKiller will disply the software license (EULA), click on "Accept" to continue.
  • If RogueKiller is unable to load, do not hesitate to try launching it several times or rename it winlogon.
  • Click "Start Scan" to begin the analysis. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan is complete, click the "Open TXT" button to display the scan report.
  • Copy/Paste it's content in your next reply.

Do not use the Remove Selected option until i`ve had a look at the log..

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks!  I got the "Error:  Malwarebytes is unable to load the Anti-Rootkit Driver.  Error code:20026.  Do you want to continue the scan without anti-rootkit support?" message during my first attempt to run the Malwarebytes scan with the rootkit scanning option enabled.  Attempting to continue the scan would result in me being brought back to the dashboard and I was only allowed to see the scan progress on that screen.  I could only run scans in a normal manner and get logs by disabling the rootkit option.  Here are all the logs:

roguekillerremovallog.txt

mbscanattempt1.txt

mbscanattempt2.txt

mbscanattempt3.txt

AdwCleaner[S159].txt

mrtscanresults.txt

Thanks for those logs and information update. I want you to make a clean install of Malwarebytes, see if that makes a difference loading the anti-rootkit driver...

Totally Remove Malwarebytes from your system:

Download the latest version of MB-Clean by clicking this link: https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean save to your Desktop, or a folder of your choice.

  • Close all open applications
  • Double-click and run mb-clean.exe
  • A prompt with an option to clean up the system will appear:

Yes - will proceed with backing up the license key (Malwarebytes 3.x only) and initiating the cleanup process. (Recommended)
No - will exit the utility

Once the cleanup process is completed, a prompt will appear:

Yes – will proceed and post reboot you will be prompted to continue with the downloading, installation and activation of latest version of Malwarebytes 3.x (Recommended)
No – will exit the utility and you will not be prompted (post reboot) to download, reinstall and re-activate (Not Recommended)

We recommend rebooting immediately. Additionally, stopping at this step is not recommended and will most likely not resolve your issue(s).

Upon reboot, a prompt will appear:

Yes - will download, install and activate the latest version of Malwarebytes 3.x (Recommended)
No - will exit the utility and the cleanup process is complete...

A log file ("mb-clean-results.txt") will be on your desktop

When that completes try a scan with settings as follows:

Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • On the Settings tab > Protection Scroll to and make sure the following are selected:
    Scan for Rootkits
    Scan within Archives

  • Scroll further to Potential Threat Protection make sure the following are set as follows:
Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP`s) set as :- Always detect PUP`s (recommended)
Potentially Unwanted Modifications (PUM`s) set as :- Alwaysdetect PUM`s (recommended)

  • Click on the Scan make sure Threat Scan is selected,
  • A Threat Scan will begin.
  • When the scan is complete if anything is found make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (that will automatically check all detected items), then click on the Quarantine Selected Tab
  • If asked to restart your computer to complete the removal, please do so
  • When complete click on Export Summary after deletion (bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard.
  • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more to retrieve the log.

To get the log from Malwarebytes do the following:

  • Click on the Reports tab > from main interface.
  • Double click on the Scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.

Text file (*.txt) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply

  • Use "Copy to Clipboard, then Right click to your reply > select "Paste" that will copy the log to your reply…

Thank you,

Kevin

I did what you said and Malwarebytes ran without a problem.  Do you want the "mb-clean-results.txt" log as well?  I have a few other questions too.  Will this version of Malwarebytes expire and require the purchase of a subscription?  Should I delete and reinstall Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to see if it runs without issue now?

Thanks for the update Crimsoncricket,

As Malwarebytes has now run without issue there is no need for mb-clean-results.txt to be posted... Malwarebytes will revert to "free version" after trial period ends, you will only need a subscription license if that is what you prefer.

Regarding MBAR, yes please delete all references, download again, run a scan and post the two logs:

Thank you,

Kevin

Excellent, thanks for confirmation... Continue to clean up:

Uninstall Sophos AV http://www.askvg.com/how-to-completely-uninstall-remove-a-software-program-in-windows-without-using-3rd-party-software/

Also delete this folder if still present: C:\ProgramData\Sophos

Next,

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

If your security program alerts to Delfix either, accept the alert or turn your security off.

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  • Remove disinfection tools <----- this will remove tools we may have used.
  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.
  • Reset system settings <--- this will reset any system settings back to default that were changed either by us during cleansing or malware/infection

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…
