real time protection can't be turned on

Am on Windows 10 and downloaded and installed the most recent version a few days ago:  version 3.3.1.2183 component 1.0.236 update package 1.0.3270.  Ever since I've been getting Malwarebytes warnings about not being protected and that "real time protection is turned off".  I have repeatedly clicked the slider to try to turn on real time web protection, and it briefly shows green and "starting" but then goes back to "off".  the other three Prime protection components are "on".  What can I do to get the web protection to turn on?
