Malwarebytes Not Responding

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Malwarebytes is no longer completing and is left in a 'Not responding state'.

History

I have a desktop computer with Windows XP SP3 fully patched.

I had a power cut which killed the machine.

The people at the computer store:

- Installed a new motherboard

- Changed the CPU from a P4 to a Celeron

- Increased the memory to 4GB from 1.5GB.

- Cloned the existing disk C/D to a new disk (C/D) that is larger.

- Formatted the old c/d drive to F.

- Uninstalled Free AVG

- Installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

Now when I run Malwarebytes it never completes.  If I check Task Manager it indicated that Malwarebytes is not responding.  Malwarebytes is fully up to date.

I never had issues before the 'upgrade'.

The computer store said I should uninstall/reinstall Mallwarebytes which I have done.  Still no luck.

If I just scan drive F (the formatted drive).  This also hangs.

It has 2 folders:

- RECYCLER

- System Volume Information

It appears to hang on System Volume Information but no file name is shown.

I switched off MSSE real time scaning and still get the same problem.

When running on drive C or D it appears to be random when it stops.

I run Malwarebytes on 2 other machines without a problem.  These are laptops where the problem is with a desktop.

I have done some searching, but cannot find anything that relates to my problem.

Any ideas on how I can resolve this issue?

Thanks

Gordon

Hello Gordon and :welcome:

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop
dds.scr
dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply as an attachment: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
  • You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file and just post it or attach it.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your reply.

I have attached the 2 files as requested.

Interesting the dds.txt refers to AVG and ZoneAlarm.  Both of which are nolonger installed on this computer.

AV: AVG AntiVirus Free Edition 2013 *Enabled/Outdated* {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}
AV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Disabled/Updated* {EDB4FA23-53B8-4AFA-8C5D-99752CCA7095}
FW: ZoneAlarm Firewall *Disabled*

Many thanks for your help.

Gordon
