Hello:
I posted earlier to the "PC Help" board, which might have been the wrong spot, so I'm trying again here.
I am having trouble with both install and (now) uninstall on a new laptop running W7 Pro (32) -- the system details are below in my signature.
I'm not a computer engineer, but am reasonably savvy (in an old geezer, home-user, doctoral-education level kinda way ).
Problem 1: After what appeared to be a successful installation 2 days ago, including update to current defs file and a clean scan, I noticed that the desktop shortcut icon had changed to a "generic" icon when I booted the computer today (see attached sshot). Moreover, though I configured the program for a Windows start menu folder during installation, it wasn't there. Despite both these issues, I was able to open the main GUI by clicking the wonky-appearing shortcut, and was able to update to today's defs. I probably should have cut my losses at that point.... But I opted to uninstall, reboot, redownload and reinstall because of the weird icon and the missing folder.
Same problem even after reinstalling. So....
Problem 2: I found your forums, including a recent post about installation issues, with instructions on how to do a clean uninstall/reinstall (including running the cleaner!). When I followed all those instructions exactly, including all the required reboots, I A. got an error message when running the cleaner (see attached sshot) and B. couldn't remove the pesky shortcut icon from the desktop. IOW, even after uninstalling, rebooting, running the cleaner and rebooting, the shortcut was still there even though, as best as I could tell, the program HAD been uninstalled. At this point, I just did a system restore to a rollback point created before I installed MWB the first time. I *think* all the traces are gone (nothing in the registry, nothing detected by Revo Uninstaller), but it was a messy process.
So, after all the glowing reviews, I am at a loss and not very happy.
I was planning to purchase the full version for both my systems, but, needless to say, I can't consider that unless I determine what went wrong both with the installations and the uninstallations.
Is this a Windows 7 compatibility problem?
Something else?
Would sure appreciate any help!
TIA,
daledoc1

Hello:
Just installed free version on my Dell Latitude E6500; Win 7 Pro (32); Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB RAM; IE 8; Webroot Internet Security Essentials (firewall diabled during MWB install), current version; High speed internet; NVIDIA Quadro NSV 160M.
Having 2 problems:
1) Creates desktop shortcut just fine during install, but then it "disappears" (or more accurately, it reverts to the "generic" icon).
2) Despite checking the box during install to create a folder in the start menu, it's NOT there.
I installed the app once a couple of days ago, and all seemed fine (was able to update definitions, ran a clean scan, etc).
When I rebooted the machine today (at work, behind the employer's firewall), I noticed that the desktop icon had reverted to the "generic" icon (IOW the favicon (?) for MWB had disappeared.
And, I couldn't find the folder in the start menu.
So, I uninstalled the program and rebooted; I then downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled.
Same problem.
The main GUI opens fine when I click the wonky desktop shortcut, and the app itself seems to working OK (though I have not run another scan since reinstalling). I am able to run the program and update the defs, both at home and at work (behind the firewall).
But the desktop shortcut icon remains wonky (see attached screenshot), and the program is NOT listed in the Windows start menu.
Bug?
Display issue?
Win7 compatibility issue?
Any suggestions?
TIA,
daledoc

Hi, marktreg:
Thanks for your prompt reply. (Sorry I hit "reply" a moment ago and posted back your own post! OOPS!)
Well, first I'll have to figure out how to set the firewall/AV exclusions in WISE (the firewall and AV are both part of the same ISS; the firewall integrates into Windows Firewall, I think, even though, strictly speaking, the Windows Firewall/Defender are"disabled").
(I assume it'll involve opening the firewall/AV configuration options and then manually copying/pasting those files you listed into some field under "allowed" programs, etc? I'm new to WISE and not particularly experienced with manually setting firewall exclusions. )
I had already tried the steps for the uninstall/reinstall, but I guess I needed to add the firewall/AV exclusions FIRST, then clean uninstall (w/all the reboots needed), then download and reinstall (with firewall/AV disabled), huh?
>>>Note: If you get the SHGetValue error when running the MBAM clean tool. Please restart your computer, temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here...
I think I am already *uninstalled*. But, if I understand correctly, if I get that error message again when running the cleaner tool, I should reboot, disable firewall/AV and THEN reinstall MBAM, right?
I assume this will solve the mysterious disappearance of the the desktop shortcut icon and start folder, as well as improve the stability and functionality of the MBAM?
Thanks!!!

WHO KNEW?!?!?!
Not sure I have the energy to tackle this again tonight, so it may be a day or so before I reply.
