  1. Hmm.... I didn't even know it was an option. I thought I was missing something as my dashboard didn't change. I had to go into settings to find out there was a Legacy Style. And I agree. it's not something I would use. You have to expand it too much to see all the boxes. I didn't see a scaler to make it the whole thing smaller. I like it the way it is.

    Keep up the good work.

  2. I upgraded manually also and everything is working fine. I can't criticize, yet, that dark mode was reverted to light and I had to turn off register in Windows Security Center as I don't know if these actions will occur with a normal update. And of course the expiration date is still 12/31/22 which I'm sure will change as needed by MB staff.

  3. I had that question also but figured since this copy of V5 is for a test group that the expiration on Oct 31 will update. Is this not what will happen? Since I have no desire to be running a "free" version, can we consider this "test" over and we will all revert, or have to revert to V4?

  4. This is just an FYI. I installed Win 11 22H2 two days ago (via normal Windows update) and did not turn anything off and with V5 running it downloaded and installed with no problems.

I have seen no problems since the install with the functioning of V5.

  5. Yes. What I posted there were the directions given to me by Microsoft support. One thing I didn't emphasis and may be missed while doing this is to check the box NOT to install updates at this time. That is steps 6 and 7. If you don't check this, the failing update will try to load during the repair and since the system is not fixed yet, it will fail and roll back. The link is a generic way to do a repair install and isn't taking into consideration why you are doing it so it gives you the option to do them during the repair. I had that failure happen to me on my first attempt to do the repair. Just a waste of time to have to start over again. It will tell you the upgrade failed due to failure to install an update.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance. I started a new thread on the Microsoft Forum (I have a different log in name there) and it explains what I did for the latest update:

    Help with Installing Updates

Yes, it's a common issue with Windows 11 and we're currently working on it. Apologies for the inconvenience. For now, we highly suggest that you install the updates using the ISO file. This should install all pending updates and quality fixes.
Please go to this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11
    1. Scroll down a little and once you see Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO), please click the dropdown and choose Windows 11 and then choose your desire language and then choose 64 bit and start downloading.

  6. In July I was able to install KB5015814 by turning off Malwarebytes. That didn't work in August with KB5016629. I did the in-place repair update and was able to install it successfully but I had also turned off MB as a precaution.

For the current KB5016691, I did NOT turn off MB and it installed without any problems. So it appears the in-place repair fixed whatever was stopping the installations and Malwarebytes had nothing to do with it.

As mentioned by others, would be good to have latest virus definitions version on the Tray Icon.
Thanks for the suggestion. We'll look into this. Would you be able to briefly explain how you would use that information? For instance, would the goal be to check whether you have the latest updates? And if so, how would the version number be helpful - how/where would you validate what version number is the most current?

Granted the average user would not even notice this nor even be aware of what version or component package, etc they are using but when they do encounter a problem, one of first things they are asked is what version, component package, etc are they using. The power user would use this information when they see a new version is being offered as to what their present status is (was the update already applied) and an easy way to get it so maybe it would be nice to make this information easily available.

Thanks, I see where the version is supposed to go. I was also concerned that it might be easier to find the "about" section where you can see the build, component package and if an update was applied and a place to check for updates manually. Nothing about the "carat" would lead you to that information. I was thinking about putting an "about" section under the settings prompt in the area that shows General through Notifications.

I also noticed (can't find) a direct link that would take you to your account page so you can manage your subscriptions.

  9. It took me over 5 minutes clicking on all the dashboard and settings icons and scrolling through those sections looking for the version number and update information. I finally clicked on the unlabeled "carat" in the upper right hand corner to find that information. Hovering on the carat didn't tell me what it might be for either. It would be nice to be able to find that information a bit more intuitively.

I do notice a much faster response opening MB and when navigating between sections. That is very nice.

  10. I thought it was best to NOT register MB with the Windows Security Center so as not to create a conflict. If this is true, then that function maybe should not be enabled on initial install as it was when I installed V5.

Maybe I'm missing something as to why you would want it registered but both my home PC's running V4 have it turned off and everything in the Windows Security Center looks good.

Let me rephrase this: What is the best way to configure this option? If On is the answer then disregard this suggestion.

  11. Thanks but no cigar. I ran all the DISM commands, SFC (no problems) and the update troubleshooter. Turned off MB with no startup. Rebooted. Ran standalone for 6629 as I had already successfully installed 5814 last month. It failed... again. I'll wait a bit and try the in-place install using the ISO later this month. What you did works for some (it did for me last month) but not for others. This is confusing to say the least.

  12. Well, color me surprised. Turning off MB and rebooting worked for me last month but NOT this month. KB5016629 won't install with MB off. As I expected, there is much more going on here and I'm really not sure MB has anything to do with this problem. I've done everything recommended except turning off .NET Frameworks 3.5 or doing the in-place update with the ISO. I'll probably wait this out until MS comes out with a published "fix" or until 22H2 is released.

  13. I know this is not my thread but I may have something to add. I have two threads running on the Microsoft Forum for past KB cumulative updates failing to install (under the name KenMel). I had no problems through the June 14th updates. I couldn't install the June quality update nor the July 12th update. I disabled Malwarebytes and unchecked load at startup. Rebooted and was able to install KB5015814. I haven't tried to install the Aug update yet. What I have seen on my threads is there are many workarounds that have worked. BUT... some work for some people while the same won't work for others. Some people have used a combination of workarounds to get the updates to install. Disabling Malwarebytes; disabling .NETFrameworks; doing an in-place repair using the Win 11 ISO and on and on. This is not an isolated event.

I chatted with Microsoft support. This a direct quote from that chat:

I certainly can't explain why disabling MB worked for me. Many others with the problem are not even using MB. This is affecting AMD and Intel CPU's. Brand new store bought PC's. Older home built PC's. I personally am waiting for Microsoft to come up with a "real" fix before I try installing another cumulative update. And this is ONLY affecting cumulative updates. Other updates are installing fine.

  14. There are a myriad of "fixes" that seem to get the KB's in question to install. Some things work for some and not for others. I got it to work by disabling MB at startup, rebooting and it installed successfully through WIndows Update. This does not work for others. A lot of people are placing the blame on MB but even though disabling it worked for me, I'm not convinced that's the whole problem. The in place upgrade seems to work for the most people. It didn't for me.(If you do try the upgrade, make sure you uncheck to download and install updates before you run it.) What I see a lot of people doing is going to extremes with turning .NET framework off, to disconnecting their internet, to spitting in a bowl and praying to a fake idol (that was sarcasm, but you get the idea). This is WAY TOO MUCH to do for the average user. Unless you feel threatened by not having this update, just relax and see if MS comes up with something before the Aug 9 patches. That's just my 2 cents and it's probably worth that much.

  15. Obviously this update is installing without a problem for most of the millions of Win 11 users. But there are a good many reporting it is failing. These 2 updates are first time I've had a problem with Windows updates in years. I only post here as in the threads I started on the MS forum there are reports disabling MB allowed the update to succeed (as it did for me). But I highly doubt that is the full answer as some posters say they are not using MB. This is a mystery that I'm afraid will take MS to explain and fix properly.

  16. I've couldn't install the optional KB5014668 at the end of June nor KB5015814. I started a thread for each on the MS forum. Today there were several posts about successful installs of KB5015814 after turning off MB. I turned MB off, rebooted and was able to install the update. I agree with Porthos though. I've seen other posts that the install won't work and the user does not have MB installed. I think there are other issues involved in these update failures.

  17. I completed that task successfully. After restart I tried to update MB. I got the same failure.

I've been trying to figure what the PC's have in common. Both are using a Razer Keyboard (and I have a Razer headset). Both have been getting Razer updates several times last month. I tried to end task for any Razer function in task manager and set it not to start at boot up. The MB update still failed. I know Razer has caused other problems in the past and maybe an update changed something in the system that even with Synapse off it has already changed something. I know that's a long shot but I can't think of another program that been doing updates on both PC's this last month. Microsoft 365 on both and Cox is our internet provider. Although there are some other programs both are running, I don't recall any other updates to them last month.

Edited: Both PC's had updates for Macrium Reflect and Razer Synapse which all downloaded and installed successfully this morning. Both also had successful Defender definitions updates. MB updates still not working on both.

  18. I changed the IPv4 setting in my TPLink router to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and successfully rebooted.

Neither PC will do the updates on MB. I can understand that I might have screwed something up on mine (Win11) while trying to fix the broken MS update but nothing was touched on her PC running Win 10. I also rebooted the PC.

I'm enclosing the clean uninstall logs. Maybe something wasn't done correctly. It kept trying to get me install the Privacy thing and I said no.

The error I'm seeing is I see the download dialog box at 0%. It stays there for a few seconds then it says "One or more items in the current update did not complete successfully. Please check your internet connection and try again. If you need more help , visit our support site."

    mbst-clean-results.txt

  19. I ran the clean uninstall and then the offline installation. It completed successfully and I'm on 4.5.1.0.200  1.0.56595 and 1.0.1709

However, when I ran, check for updates, the same error popped up again asking me to check my connection. I had already rebooted my modem and router.

And again, why is this also happening on my wife's PC which is a Win10 version?

  20. OK. I'll try the removal and let you know. Any ideas about the clean up? There seems to be a repair tool on the MB download (option 3) that resets a lot of those.

More importantly, how did this all of a sudden fault on my wife's PC at the same time?

I know about the BlackOps fault. It faults everytime I shut it down. I see it the reliability report. Not sure how to reset the other stuff other than do a repair install.
