  1. Could you eplain why, or tell me what I am doing wrong?

To be honest, I don't know exactly why that would happen. Setup is clearly having some issues.

What type of virtual hardware setup does your VM have? Or, more specifically, what type of storage controller is it set to emulate?

  2. Thanks for the links, I'll take a look.

My budget is about £300 to £350, can't really go more than that.

Are there any retailers that sell in both the USA and the UK? It's hard to look stuff up for you when all of the online retailers that I frequent don't sell in the UK. ;)

Edit: I guess I should have tried amazon.co.uk before I asked that.

  3. WoW I disaperar for a while and eveything changes, first VT then this. ...

Personally, I dislike the VT change more than the change here. VT has lost some functionality that I used, and while our forums have as well, most of what isn't working is stuff I didn't use, so it is hitting the others harder than it is hitting me.

  4. The size of a netbook is a bit of an issue. They are much easier to carry around, you don't need a lot of space to use one, and the battery usually lasts a long time. Unfortunately, with those tiny screens, it is difficult to read anything on them. They also tend to be rather underpowered, and once you get anti-virus and anti-malware software installed and running, sometimes you have trouble with videos on YouTube and other online video sites not playing smoothly anymore. You can also forget about DVD's, as you would need an external DVD drive to even play them.

A small laptop would be recommended over a netbook.

  5. Do you have any idea how to resolve that?

Possibly a repair install of Windows. If I remember right, that will allow you to re-activate your copy of Windows XP that is running in the VM, and licensing issues would no longer be a problem.

Edit: This article should give you a fairly good idea of how to do it.

  6. It's possible the configuration is incorrect or a driver conflict(in the vm).

Driver issue was my first thought.

Another possibility is that Windows XP will usually BSOD once you put it in a system with a different motherboard. I have always been told that Windows XP will do this to prevent you from trying to copy your install of Windows to another computer, thus bypassing the licensing restrictions. I have to admit that the last time I installed a different motherboard in a Windows XP system (different manufacturer and different chipset) that Windows XP booted just fine, so I don't know if it was just a difference between the OEM and retail versions of perhaps that was never true and it was something else the entire time.

  7. I'm not finding anything else. No information as to who they are and where they came from. From their website I would say that they are clearly not natively English-speaking, but that doesn't exactly tell us much about them.

  8. I wonder if they are related to this company:

    Anvisoft Technologies India Pvt Ltd
    Website: http://www.innroad.com
    Executive Name: P.V. Ratnakar
Address: Anvisoft Technologies India pvt ltd
7th Floor, 2A, Maximus Towers, Mindspace complex,
    HYDERABAD,Andhra Pradesh,India 500001
    Email Address: ******@innroad.com
    Telephone: 91-40-4033****

I'm not seeing anything that links them together, so may just be a similarly named company.

  9. ...

If it is a Beta version and "...there is no database update in our beta version..." then its a failure as far as I am concerned.

Database version is 01.01.01 but is dated today.

Also, I cannot find anything that their "cloud scanner" actually detects. Does this software do anything? It did delete my temp files when it said it did, but it did it without me clicking 'fix', so I can't say I trust it.

  10. Infecting a BIOS or firmware with malicious code is of course possible, and I would believe that it has been done in the past, however there is a problem with it. Not every motherboard uses the same BIOS. Even when two different motherboards use the same BIOS, I'm not certain if the configuration would be similar enough for you to inject code via the same method.

Note that they wouldn't need to use drivers to inject things into the BIOS. Direct access to the hardware is possible, otherwise the drivers wouldn't have access and neither would BIOS flash utilities that motherboard manufacturers make for you to update the BIOS on your motherboard.

The area of hardware infection is sort of an odd one, because so far it hasn't been necessary. Rootkits can load from the boot sector, and the operating system really can't do anything to protect itself from that as it is, so until this "Secure Boot" thing gets forced upon us, we probably won't see a lot of hardware infections. As for how many we see after Secure Boot, that just depends on how easy it is to crack it or bypass it. Something tells me that it isn't going to be as secure as they claim.

  11. I have a computer that failed a while back, and I still have its hard disk. I would like to convert that HD to a vm. Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, how would I accomplish that?

I remember VMware once advertising a feature for VMware Player that allowed copying an install of Windows from a physical computer into a virtual machine, however I was under the impression that the OS you wanted to do that to had to be booted in order for it to work. Regardless, you may want to check it out, and see if it is possible to do it with an offline system.

  12. Thanks for the update Robert. ;)

For what it's worth, the default IP.Board theme works fine. A majority of the issues are related to the custom theme.

Yeah, I switched to the IPB default theme on the first day. The new header for the Malwarebytes theme looks awesome, but the contrast issues just made it a bit painful to read. The IPB theme is only marginally better, but better is still better.
