  1. I'm currently on a BrightHouse connection, and it isn't bad.

Verizon's FiOS service is supposed to be pretty good, however some people don't like the modem that they give you (if you get the wireless modem, that is). If you can get Verizon FiOS in your area, I have heard that you can ask them to run ethernet into your house that can then plug into any router you would prefer to use, and you don't have to use their router. The issue with using a third-party router with Verizon's FiOS is that apparently Verizon will not provide you with technical support if you are using a third-party router.

  2. Also Windows Media Player, funny thing is it does what its meant to do and it works great, and I think the interface is just fine.

I forgot to mention... When VLC Media Player and SMPlayer start having trouble playing a video (I've noticed issues on my old PC with 1080p videos where the video and audio get out of sync in VLC and SMPlayer or where the video gets choppy or the performance degrades in some other fashion), Windows Media Player will play the video without any problems. Granted I have codecs installed for just about everything, so Windows Media Player will play just about everything. I can see people having problems if they don't know that they need to install codecs for other video and audio formats.

I'm not fan on Windows Media Player, however it does do what it claims to, and as far as playing media it actually does that quite well. Better, in fact, than VLC media player does. VLC just supports a plethora of formats and doesn't have all of those annoying features that WMP has...

  3. I want to slap them for some of the stupid things they say in that article. I mean seriously, Windows Command Prompt? Crapware? And Notepad? I admit that there are better utilities with more features, however to call Notepad and Command Prompt crapware is going way to far. These guys got on a soapbox to complain about trivial stuff, and then recommended crapware that is worse that AIM and WLM put together as a replacement for AIM and WLM? OK, so they recommended Pidgin as well, however that does not excuse recommending Digsby in the same sentence...

  4. VM. :)

Being a VM, some samples will delete themselves when you run them, so it wasn't a proper test (just like the one I conducted wasn't proper), however it still shows that the protection in Anvi Smart Defender is rather lacking...

Of course, when it came to most of the samples I would find, MSE was the only thing that detected most of them. Even MBAM would fail on a lot of them.

  5. I like my Palm Pre, however I have never believed that it was worth the $550.00 retail price. $200.00 would be acceptable for most of these smart phones that we see with $500+ price tags, but I don't feel that any of them are worth the full retail price.

That being said, ASUS is about to put a new Android phone out on the market, and when I watched the video below I said to myself "This has got to be the first phone that's actually worth paying $500 for". I have been a fan of ASUS for many years (well, not so much of their drivers for their sound cards, but I love their motherboards) and this is a great example of what a hardware manufacturer can do if they put some time into R&D and focus on coming up with some truly innovative products.

So, after watching that video, is anyone else as excited as I am?

  6. If you want more, just answer one or 2 of the Spams reply to sender with no content but don't open them, then they know you are active and your Spam box will grow every day.

Another way is to open a spam e-mail that has an embeded image in it. They know how to use that to tell if there is a live person reading their spam.

  7. If you send it, we'll file abuse claims against them, and hopefully get a majority of them shut down or booted ;)

OK, how do you want me to send it to you? I can save the messages as text files and send them to you via PM's.

  8. ... going to the trouble of setting this up does not leave one with much ability to say they didn't know what they were doing and ask for leniency.

Considering how many people use encryption for legitimate purposes (secure communications, legal file sharing, etc) you could always argue that this is a normal means of communicating or sharing files. Whether or not a court would show leniency would depend on the dispositions of the judge and jury, as well as the abilities of the lawyers to make the judge and jury see things their way.

Unfortunately, the legal system in the USA is not black and white...

  9. I don't wanna sound pro cenzorship or anything, but these were bad guys, they probably deserved what they got.

I never liked MegaUpload, however I'm not sure how they were "bad guys". The people who did this to them were the real criminals.

... What are you guys using out of curiosity? ...

My own FTP server, or when I'm feeling lazy I use BayFiles (and yes I do know who runs it).

... I've actually been hearing about this new technology from Audials that is apparently safe to use; they are calling it a dark net (uuh). ...

Dark nets are nothing new. Freenet has used one for a long time. The idea is complete and total anonymity on the Internet. Dark nets are P2P networks that use heavy encryption to prevent anyone from knowing what it being transmitted over the network. A dark net works differently than a normal P2P network however, as you are required to build your own list of trusted peers. This is different than what is called an "open net", where the client automatically connects to anyone else's client that it can. Dark nets are actually far more secure, and far better at protecting your data. Dark nets are not a bad thing (unless you work for the FBI, because dark nets are meant to guarantee our freedom from government and corporate scrutiny).

I could also run ComboFix for good measure, but I have work to do, and not enough time for playing with malware samples. I will try to remember to do some more tests after I manage to build a new PC, and turn this old one into a dedicated test rig. That should be sometime early to mid March. ;)

  11. OK, here's a quick rundown of what I did:

I pulled 10 samples off of S!Ri's VX Vault, and saved them on the desktop of my Windows XP Pro SP3 VM:

    post-1983-0-23176300-1329672769.png

I scanned them with Anvi Smart Defender's cloud scanner, and here is the result (I don't see a way to save a log):

    post-1983-0-19905900-1329672862.png

I ran a Quick Scan with Anvi Smart Defender, and here is the log (let me stress that, aside from the samples sitting on the desktop, the installation of Windows on this VM was completely clean):

I then proceeded to run each one of those. The nastier bits automatically deleted themselves (as is typical with running samples like this in a VM).

Here was the only alert generated by Anvi Smart Defender during the process of installing all of that junk:

    post-1983-0-49765100-1329673350.png

Unfortunately, I don't have time to run the final scans, as I need to leave. I have paused my VM for now, and will continue once I return this evening. ;)

  12. From what I can see, all he did was scan a folder full of samples. That is not a legitimate test.

BTW: We've already discussed Anvisoft Smart Defender, and none of us were very impressed. Perhaps it is different now that it is out of beta. I'll pull up a VM and take a look, but since it is a VM then obviously the test will not be absolute proof of the software's capabilities, since some malware will simply delete itself in a VM rather than run and infect the system.

  13. There's a big difference in the law concerning a minor's processional rights vs. their human rights.

With the right jury present, you could argue that destruction of personal property is a violation of laws banning "cruel and unusual punishment", and a parent would get jail time for doing it. Also, with the right judge and jury, you can convince them that property rights normally considered as only applying to adults also apply to minors.

As I said, whether or not it could be pulled off depends on a few factors, but it is possible. Obviously it wouldn't work in every municipality, however there are places where this father would have been arrested for shooting that laptop, even though he paid for it (even if the arresting charge was nothing more than shooting a firearm within city limits). It just so happens that he did it in a place where it was legal, so there is no issue with it.

Our legal system does not always make sense when it comes to laws regarding minors, and those laws are different in every state, with each county and city having the ability to make their own laws on minors. You have to do a lot of reading to figure out what is and isn't legal for parents to do these days, and the laws are not always sane.

  14. Even if the father did NOT pay for the laptop, she is a minor. Her father is still "...within his rights to unload whatever firearm he wants to on the laptop for any reason he wants to."

There are some courts that might convict the father of a criminal act if he were to destroy something his daughter payed for without her permission (and at the price of a laptop that could be a felony). Depends on state law, the disposition of the jury, and the judge's interpretation of property rights.

If the father had destroyed a laptop that the daughter had payed for, then I would at least expect him to reimburse her the full purchase price of the laptop. Destroying someone's personal property is not punishment, it is a criminal act, regardless of the age of the individual or your relationship with them. That is why I said "as long as he was the one who paid for the laptop and all of the software/upgrades/etc.", because what a man does with property that he paid for is his own business. Since the girl is his child, and is a minor, I can overlook the fact that normally property changes ownership the moment you give it away, even if there was no payment in return.

  15. Arthur; without knowing both sides of the story "right down to the nitty-gritty of he said, she said, and the period of time involved" before it lead up to the extreme action can we really make an informed opinion?? Maybe the rants on FACEBOOK were the proverbial "straw"??

As I said Steve, the guy had every right to shoot that laptop, so long as he was the one who paid for it. It isn't the shooting of the laptop that I have a problem with. ;)

I am quite in favor of carrying and using firearms, so long as you are respectful of others and their property.

My comments above, about parenting in general, still stand.

  16. A 15 year old girl complaining on Facebook? This is gun-worthy?

I know a lot of people that said "Good for him!" when they heard he shot up his daughter's laptop.

My personal position is simply that as long as he was the one who paid for the laptop and all of the software/upgrades/etc. then he is well within his rights to unload whatever firearm he wants to on the laptop for any reason he wants to.

Of course, regardless of whether or not the guy had the right to do what he did, the comments I made above still stand. ;)

  17. If the guy payed for the laptop, then I don't see a problem with him putting a few rounds of .45 ACP into it. That's his own money that he just shot up.

As far as his issues with his daughter, I'll admit that the chores he has her do are not very hefty or burdensome. That being said, I still blame the parents for the issues with their daughter. If all you do is send you kid to school, then have them do some work when they come home (schoolwork/housework/etc), and then just leave them to themselves or to their friends they do tend to become more bitter towards you. Think about it for a moment. If your life is going to school and hanging out with friends, and then someone who doesn't play much of a role in your life tells you that you have to do something or you will endure some punishment, why wouldn't you be bitter? Also, don't think that providing a house, food, clothing, laptop, etc. means that a parent plays a significant role in a child's life. If the majority of a child's time is spent with friends (and that includes time at school) then those friends play the most significant role in the child's life, regardless of the contributions made by the parent.

In all honesty, a parent that does nothing more than provide necessities, toys, and gadgets for their child is not a parent. The government does that for people as well, and government social workers tend to spend more time with people than parents do with their children. If you cannot be bothered to spend time with your child, and be the primary mentor and teacher in your child's life, then you should expect them to not respect you and to be rebellious during their teenage years. If someone else is the primary mentor or teacher of your child (and that includes Church youth groups) then you are going to have problems with them, as they will not respect you as a parent when you never fulfilled the role of a parent.

Now let me be perfectly clear that I don't have a problem with children doing chores. I just have a problem with parents who have their children doing work for them, but they won't spend any actual time with their children. At least go do the chores with your children, and patiently teach them how best to do them. Some day, you might actually find your children volunteering to go out and do the chores themselves.
