"No bootable cd in ATAPI cd rom"

Recommended Posts

Hey

Been using MB for some time, always found it reliable and useful..

I was performing a scan one someone else's laptop (Packard Bell, oldish!) & it found some viruses (one of the TDSS kind & also trojan.hiloti.s amongst others). Was asked to restart to complete the removal of the viruses, but then got the "No bootable cd in atapi cd rom" message when it restarted!

Incase anyone asks.. no, there isn't a CD in the drive when I boot up :) I've gone back into the BIOS & change the primart boot device back to HDD, but I just get the black screen with a cursor.

Thus, I cannot enter into Windows XP :( I have tried a few things, but they haven't worked, I'm assuming I did them correctly! I have tried the following as I have the Windows XP CD (courtesy of my Dell desktop)

1) Windows Install - previous successful installation, followed by Chkdsk

2) Windows Install - Repair - R

3) Created & tried using a bootable linux USB, but get a "Boot Error" message (I assume this is due to laptop BIOS not being able to perform this, as the Bootable USB works fine on the desktop)

4) I tried the following command in Windows Recovery Console: EXPAND -R d:\I386\atapi.sy_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys but got Invalid Parameter message, have I typed something wrong, and is it even relevant? (saw it another part of this forum)

Just can't seem to sort this out, and it's a bit frustrating as you can imagine. I'm assuming the only other options are to create a bootable CD, and attempt it with this. I did burn and try Hiren's Bootable CD, but neither laptop nor desktop recognised it for some reason! So might try this again with another Bootable CD?

I'm wondering if MB deleted ATAPI.sys related values? All this is leaving me a bit puzzled, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance
