Hello and :welcome:

Please provide following details, so that someone may be able to assist you:

  • OS version including 32/64-bit - Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
  • Installed Security Product(s) including Firewall and Program Versions - See below.
  • MBAM version (current 1.50.1.1100) (Free or Pro) - Version 1.50.1.1100 Pro
  • Definition version (current 6068) - 5990
  • Do you use a router to connect to Internet - Yes, a 2-WIRE Router

I have a new DELL SPX 15 Laptop, which to my surprise came bundled with McAfee anti-virus. It was not "enabled" and although it queried me several times to enable it, I chose not to do so.

I checked the Windows Firewall and it indicated that "Home or Work(private) networks" are connected and "Public networks" are not. It has a message indicating that these settings are being "managed" by McAfee Personal Firewall.

I then sellected "Allow Programs and Features" and checked the boxes for Home & Public networks, hoping that would allow Malewarebytes' Anti-Malware to update. This did not work, I got the same error code as before.

Obviously, I am in over my head on this problem. Hopefully you can help.

Thanks,

Jim

There is a known issue with some versions of McAfee and updating Malwarebytes....

NOTE: You may look in THIS THREAD where you can find how to add exceptions in McAfee

Please exclude the following files from your Mcafee Antivirus Software (not sure what version of you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.
