The first Tuesday in November they run the Melbourne Cup - The nation comes to a halt as the greatest 2 mile Horse Race (3200 met) is run -

With entries from around the world trying to win the $6 Million race -

This year is the 150th running of the Cup and it will , as always , be a great spectacle -

About 3.10 PM local time all eyes and ears are tuned to TVs and radios - Plus it is a Public Holiday in the capital and also some rural areas -

EDIT - Just won by Americain by 2 lengths in the last 50 meters (Australian/French owned with a French Jockey on it) -

Started about 10 to 1 , with the favorite , So You Think , at less than even money , in 3rd place ----

Americain also won the Geelong Cup (near where I live) the first of the big Cup Series -
