Malware 1.46 installs but won't run

Hi there. I've been doing my regualar scans with Eset online scanner weekly and i use Avast Antivirus with all the realtime shields running. Eset has found some trojans recently and has removed them but a friend who's a bit more tech savvie than myself suggested that I install the latest version of malwarebytes which i've done tonight. I've installed superantispyware and that runs fine and has found some other nasties and dealt with them. I've come to run Malwarebytes from the desktop icon after this to provide another level of protection (as i was advised to do by my friend) and the vista 'ask me if I want to run' window appears asking me if i want to run malwarebytes and after telling it to run it just shuts itself down and nothing happens. I use firefox and haven't been having any redirection problems in the browser so i don't know if i'm infected or not but I can't run the installed malwarbytes program.

Any ideas?

Please try the following to see if it helps:

Windows XP:

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
      Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start vista-7-start.png button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important

Firefox. No joy i'm afraid. I followed instructions to the letter with downloads from your links and when it's been installed I check the 'launch malwarebytes' 'update malwarebytes' boxes and it neither launches nor updates and won't launch manually.

Where can we go from here as i'm not sure that i'm actually infected due to lack of redirects and the fact that other spyware software will run.

It is quite possible that some malware on your computer is stopping it from installing successfully and also running. You will need help from the experts.
