XP Antispyware 2010 - new problems

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen this exact scenario addressed yet...

So I got hit with Antispyware 2010 on Saturday. I downloaded malwarebytes onto my home PC, transferred to a flash drive along with fixexe...it ran, said it found the stuff, and deleted.

Did I mention that this is my work laptop? I got this thing while looking up freakin reviews for Dragon Age Origins...anyways, besides the point...

So today it comes back. I re-run the scan, comes up with nothing. I realize I didn't update it the first time I ran it, so I go to update...it loads the update, then it says "The latest version of Malwarebyes' Anti-Malware has been downloaded. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware will now close and install the latest version."

No big deal, except as soon as I hit "OK" it tries to restart, and I get a windows error message saying "av.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" and then mbam never re-opens, and never actually installs the update.

Is there another version of mbam that I can download that already has this update? I know where the registry housing the program is, and I can go delete the thing myself, but everything I read says deleting it yourself will cause errors trying to open up other .exe files, and so far I haven't found anything that makes me feel 100% comfortable doing it. Like I said, this is my work laptop, and I would really rather not jack everything up....

Hello helphelphelp! Welcome to MalwareBytes' Anti-MAlware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install any software or hardware, while work on.

Step 1:

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

  1. rkill.exe
  2. rkill.com
  3. rkill.scr
  4. rkill.pif
  5. WiNlOgOn.exe
  6. uSeRiNiT.exe

Please post the log in your next reply.

Note: The log can be found at the root of your installed hard drive entitled rkill.log

Step 2:

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* Rkill log

* HijackThis log
