For each of you who are having this error, do the following from the profile you have this error..

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox in it:

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" >> peek1.txt

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" >> peek2.txt

type peek1.txt >> look.txt

type peek2.txt >> look.txt

del peek*.txt

start notepad look.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.

It should look like this: bat.gif

Doubleclick on it and notepad should open.

Attach the log in your next reply.

Also, let me know if you have upgraded to XP from an older OS (Windows ME, Windows 98..) before.

Also, when I have the results, I will send each one of you a Private Message with instructions. This because this is a case per case situation and I want to avoid that others use the same fix I post, since this may be different for every user.

Jaaaaaan, this is the reason why we added this check, because your appdata variable isn't set to C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Jan\Anwendungsdaten here, which may result in a lot of misdetections if you use Malwarebytes, that's why we prevent this with this error.

I'm going to send you a private message with extra instructions :)

For anyone having this problem, an easy workaround is to create a new userprofile and run Malwarebytes from there if you want to run a scan.

But please send me the export of look.bat (the batch I posted in above, executed from the userprofile where malwarebytes throws this error) via Private message (only when you have this 704 error!), so I can collect the data, so we can "finetune" this in a next version.

Please uninstall the software via Add\Remove Programs applet.

Reboot the system.

Then run this clean up tool and allow a reboot when prompted.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe

Then reinstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from the link below (downloads do not differ, registration with your ID & key activate the Pro features)

http://mbam.malwarebytes.org/program/mbam-setup.exe

Save the file to your desktop then double-click it to begin installation.

and i still get the 704 error

I need the contents of the log run from the account where you got the 704 error, otherwise I won't get the exact log.

Please log in into your other useraccount where malwarebytes doesn't run and run the look.bat there.

Also, have you tried to run Malwarebytes on the new useraccount you created (xpsetup account)? Because it *should run there since everything is set correctly there.

Unless you're dealing with another issue that causes this error (because the 704 error can have more causes such as restricted useraccount, corrupted useraccount, other programs blocking the install of malwarebytes/blocking malwarebytes related components etc etc).

Anyway, just send me the info I need via PM and I will take a look at it since this is a case per case situation.

This is an old PC running Windows 2000.... Followed your instructions but Look.txt came out blank.....

Maybe windows 2000 needs a different command to get listing of shell folders?

Just in case it helps, current user/profile is running as administrator.

Yes, reg.exe is not present by default on Windows2000

Hi,

I am also experiencing the same issue. The PC has never had any other version of Windows on it. It was a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2 with most of the updates since SP2. Malwarebytes 1.41 was working fine. I got the same error that others are getting: Error code: 704 (0, 0). I followed the instructions that miekiemoes has posted here. Please provide instructions on how to overcome this issue. I would prefer not to have to do a hack, such as creating a new user or profile.
