Can't run MBAM

Recommended Posts

I get runtime errors when I try to run MBAM, tried to download the newest version and still get the errors "0" and "440".

I cannot get to the MBAM log file, but I downloaded the HijackThis and ran the scan to get the logfile:

Please do the following to see if it fixes the error:

  • Please copy and paste the following text in the Code box exactly as written into notepad (not wordpad or any other text editor):
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll"
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ssubtmr6.dll"
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\vbalsgrid6.ocx"

  • Once you've done that click on File and select Save As...
  • In the Save dialogue box click on the drop down menu next to Save as type and select All Files
  • Name the file MBAM Fix.bat (the .bat extension is very important)
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click it to run it on XP. For Vista please right click on it and choose Run As Admin
  • Click OK to each of the 3 dialog boxes that should show a success message for each file registered
  • If you get an error that REGSVR32 "is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file", then ensure that the file REGSVR32.EXE exists in the %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32 folder. If it's not found there you can copy if from another Computer running the same operating system and service pack level.

I saved that to the desktop, but when i double-click on it to open, i see a black box for a split second, then it disappears and nothing happens. Can't tell what it says, but looks like there is white writing in it. Also cannot locate that file as you typed it, I found system 32 files but don't know what I'm looking for, and how would i copy it??

Try this instead:

Please open Notepad. Copy and paste the following text (starting with @echo on) into the Notepad document.

Navigate to File --> Save As..., and save the file as Fix.bat (make sure the Save As Type is set to All Files).

Save it to your Desktop.

@echo on
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ssubtmr6.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\vbalsgrid6.ocx"
pause

Now navigate to your Desktop, and double click Fix.bat

When it says "Press any key to continue," don't press anything yet. Copy and paste everything on the screen into your reply. Then press any key and the box will close.

Hi,

Please download Combofix by sUBs. Save it to your Desktop but do not run it yet.

Next, please open Notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.

I ran the MBAM fix.bat file and it said that three different things succeeded. Now I can open MBAM with no errors. Does this mean everything is ok now? I don't want to try the scan until I get the go-ahead.

Also, I had to disable ESET NOD32 antivirus for the ComboFix to run the scan. Can I enable that now? Please let me know if we are in the clear here! Thanks.

Hi,

Please go to VirusTotal, and upload the following files for analysis:

c:\windows\system32\linkinfo.dll

c:\windows\system32\netman.dll

c:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe

c:\windows\system32\tapisrv.dll

c:\windows\system32\user32.dll

Post the results in your reply.

Hold off on MBAM and hold off on enabling ESET. Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet during this time.

Next, please open Notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.

Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

FCOPY::

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\linkinfo.dll | c:\windows\system32\linkinfo.dll

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\netman.dll | c:\windows\system32\netman.dll

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\spoolsv.exe | c:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\tapisrv.dll | c:\windows\system32\tapisrv.dll

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\user32.dll | c:\windows\system32\user32.dll

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\regsvc.dll | c:\windows\system32\regsvc.dll

Save this as CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Now enable ESET. Then update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Ok I did the MBAM update and scan and am posting the log file. Everything looks good. Can I delete these various programs that I had to use throughout this forum?

  • Staff

Hi,

My apologies for the delay. Let's run a check for leftover malware files.

Next, please use the Internet Explorer browser and click here to use the F-Secure Online Scanner.

  • Click Start Scanning.
  • You should get a notification bar (on top) to install the ActiveX control.
  • Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
  • Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
  • In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here.
  • Click the Full System Scan button.
  • It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
  • The main scan will start.
  • Once the scan has finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
  • It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
  • The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
  • Then click the Show report button and Copy/Paste what is present under results in your next reply.

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

Hi,

My apologies for the delay.

Navigate to Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards. Notice the space between the X and the /u

This uninstalls all of ComboFix's components.

Delete SecurityCheck.

After that, navigate to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall the following program (if present):

Adobe Reader 8.1.6

Restart your computer.

Get the latest version of Adobe Reader.

If no more problems exist, then please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) It is vital that you have a firewall. The one that comes with Windows XP is not sufficient in that it only checks incoming data. I recommend selecting one of the following free firewalls. Be sure to only install one.

Kerio

Comodo

Outpost

2) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

3) Download and install IE-Spyad, which will place over 5000 'bad' sites on your Internet Explorer Restricted List. A tutorial on it can be found here.

4) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

5) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

6) WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

7) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,

-screen317
