Thumbnail Extraction issue

Recommended Posts

Running an HP laptop, with Windows 8.1

The computer starts up okay, but almost immediately the desktop starts flashing, showing the desktop icons, then showing no icons.

Task Manager shows "thumbnail handler extraction host" has MANY instances.

I was able to uninstall some of the newer programs (that shouldn't have been there in the first place) but the issue continues.

Windows key+C will sometimes bring up the charms long enough to grab Settings, but I can't find anything to change.

I was finally able to get Malwarebytes latest version installed.

After running, and finding 1,674 issues, the thumbnail thing continues.  Many of the issues were Driver Support, but that program is gone now, along with a few other programs that shouldn't have been installed in the first place.

I'm trying to run Malwarebytes, but the only way I can get to it is Task Manager, File, Run new task.

The screen flips back & forth from Desktop view to Tiles view, and each time it flips, it stays there for 2-3 seconds before flipping back.

I'm not sure I'll be able to download the mentioned programs, but can get them on a flash drive and try to install from that.

I was able to run FRST from a flash drive.  Here are the two logs.  (I hope).

When the computer is first started, its possible to get a program started before it goes haywire. And once started, it continues to run.

Malwarebytes came up clean the last time.  I'll see if I can get the one before that, where it cleaned a lot of stuff.

Continue please:

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Malwarebytes comes up clean.  But the laptop still flashes back and forth between a blank screen and a blank desktop.

The only way I can run any program is Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to Task Manager, and File, Run Task and browse.

Here is the latest mbam log that found any infections.  All runs since then have been clean.

Thanks for the update, run the following:

Unzip the contents into a newly created folder,  transfer to sick PC desktop.

Open the folder, run the tool by right click on Repair_Windows (icon with red briefcase) select "Run as Administrator"

tweak1.jpg

From the main GUI do the following:

Select Tab 3 and allow it to run Disk check

tweak2.jpg

Select Tab 4 and allow it to run SFC

tweak3.jpg

Select Tab 5 and Create System Restore Point

tweak4.jpg

Select Repairs tab => Click the Open repairs tab

tweak5.jpg

The repairs window will open, Check the boxes as indicated, also the "Restart" option, then select Start...

tweak6.jpg

DON'T use the computer while each scan is in progress.

Post the log, to access select "settings" tab > "open log folder" tab, log will be named _Windows_Repair_Log
