Frequent messages of malicious websites being blocked/Laptop hanging/ freezing.

Recommended Posts

Hi

Let me start from the beginning and get to the current situation.

Few days back I downloaded a few pics (jpeg) from my camera on to my laptop. Those pics were divided into 4 different folders. While I was able to edit and save ( in Picasa) 3 of those folders, some issues started cropping up with the 4th folder. I would edit and save 2-3 pics from the said folder but then the laptop would hang while saving the edited pic after that. Even when I would click on the folder manager option in Picasa, it would not respond and the laptop would freeze/hang. The machine had to be then restarted each time.

Also, when I would click on any website after running a Google/Bing search it would each time get redirected to a bogus/unrelated website.

To resolve this issue, I downloaded Malwarebytes (Free Version). While the quick scan ran completely- catching a few malicious items, whenever I tried to run the Full scan the scan/laptop would hang after running for few minutes.

On the Malwarebytes forum, I came across a solution to resolve the hanging of full scan. It advised to run the DSKCHK. I followed all those steps and the DSKCHK did fix some of the problematic sectors/files. After that the Full Scan ran completely without any hiccups. And again it found a couple of threats that I promptly deleted.

After this I was able to access Picasa without any issues and was able to edit and save the balance pics.

CURRENT ISSUES

1) The sites still get redirected to some bogus sites sometimes. (not always)

2) While on the net, the web page suddenly stops responding and then the laptop also hangs and has to be restarted again.

3) An MBAM bubble message keeps popping every few minutes (5 Minutes or so) that a malicious website was blocked. The address (keeps changing), Port (Keeps changing) Type (Either Outgoing/incoming) Process is always rundll32.exe

This means that there is still some sort of infection.

I would really appreciate, if you could help me resolve this.

My system details

HP Pavillion g6 Notebook (1 year old)

Windows 7 Home Version

Processor:- AMD A8-4500M APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.9GHz

Memory:- 4Gb

64-bit Operating system.

I have a Norton Anti-Virus system installed on my laptop. ( It has not detected any threats.)

The requested logs are as under. Should any more info be required from my end do let me know.

STEP 0
RKill is a program that was developed at BleepingComputer.com that attempts to terminate known malware processes
so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections.
When RKill runs it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies
that stop us from using certain tools. When finished it will display a log file that shows the processes that were
terminated while the program was running.

As RKill only terminates a program's running process, and does not delete any files, after running it you should not reboot
your computer as any malware processes that are configured to start automatically will just be started again.
Instead, after running RKill you should immediately scan your computer using the requested scans I've included.

Please download Rkill by Grinler from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

  • On Windows XP double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • On Windows Vista/Windows 7 or 8, right-click on the Rkill desktop icon and select Run As Administrator
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
  • Do not reboot the computer, you will need to run the application again.

STEP 01
Backup the Registry:
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download ERUNT from one of the following links: Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • NOTE: Do not choose to allow ERUNT to add an Entry to the Startup folder. Click NO.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.
  • Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

STEP 02
Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop.

You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • RogueKiller 32-bit | RogueKiller 64-bit
  • Quit all running programs.
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • For Vista,Windows 7/8, Right-click on the program and select Run as Administrator to start and when prompted allow it to run.
  • Read and accept the EULA (End User Licene Agreement)
  • Click Scan to scan the system.
  • When the scan completes Close the program > Don't Fix anything!
  • Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!
  • Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

Hi

Ran the combo fix as advised. Log as under.

Up till the time I ran the combofix the sites were still getting redirected, not opening properly and the system was hanging. I was still getting the MBAM message about malicious sites being blocked.

Do advise on the further course of action.

  • Root Admin

Great that looks pretty good overall.  Let me have you run the following which will clean out quite a bit of other undesirable items for you.

STEP 03
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from here

  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

STEP 04
Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
  • Right click over JRT.exe and select Run as administrator on Windows Vista or Windows 7, double-click on XP.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next reply message
  • When completed make sure to re-enable your antivirus

STEP 05
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode to your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • If prompted by the User Account Control click Yes to allow it to run.
  • Under Actions click on the Delete button.
  • Click OK on all prompts.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the entire contents of that logfile to your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt where the number in brackets indicates how often it was run.

STEP 06
button_eos.gif

Please go here to run the online antivirus scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked
  • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • If any threats were found, click the 'List of found threats' , then click Export to text file....
  • Save it to your desktop, then please copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

STEP 07
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Hey

Ran all the scans as advised. The various logs are as under.

Since the message was too long FRST.txt and ADDITION.txt has been attached with the message.

Meanwhile today, there were no malicious sites blocked bubble messages from MBAM. Also the sites did not get redirected.

I thought we had removed all versions of Java but it's still showing up.

Please uninstall ALL version of Java and reboot the computer.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
Java 7 Update 25
Java Auto Updater

Then run the following

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

How is the computer running now?

Are there still any signs of an infection or other issues related to malware?

Please download Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi

Do you not sleep? Thanks for your prompt reply.

The comp seems to be running better. No pop up message from MBAM abot blocking malicious websites. Also, the sites are now not getting redirected to bogus/spam sites.

However, I checked and there is still one problem that persists.

There are some video files on my laptop (They were copied on to this laptop from another laptop). They were running fine on the other laptop. However when I try to play them on this comp I get a message that says," Windows Media PLayer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly .Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I tried 2-3 times but  got The same message. On the 4th attempt the comp froze/hanged and I had to restart it.

This problem was there before we started the clean up process and it still exists. What could it be? They are all .avi files.

Please find the log that you requested below.

Please uninstall your Adobe Reader and then get the latest 11.x version directly from Adobe.com  make sure you uncheck any additional add-on offers such as Java, or McAfee, Norton, etc...  Just get the Adobe Reader.

As for the video it might simply be that you need an updated decoder or it could be that the video file is in fact no longer a real video and has been corrupted or encrypted by some type of infection or hardware issue.

If you have a small sample video that you can zip up and attach I'll take a look and see if it is still a real video or not.

You can also try installing the VLC Player which is great free player for video, music files.

If there is nothing else then I'll go ahead and give you the following clean up advice and wish you the best.

At this time there are no more signs of an infection on your system.
However if you are still seeing any signs of an infection please let me know.

Let's go ahead and remove the tools and logs we've used during this process.

Most of the tools used are potentially dangerous to use unsupervised or if ran at the wrong time.
They are often updated daily so if you went to use them again in the future they would be outdated anyways.

The following procedures will implement some cleanup procedures to remove these tools.
It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point.
It will also remove all the backups our tools may have created.

Uninstall ComboFix (if used):

  • Turn off all active protection software including your antivirus.
  • Push the "Windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • Please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

CF-Uninstall.png

Remove the rest of the tools used:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to your Desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.

  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not go ahead and delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

AdwCleaner Removal:

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Uninstall
  • Confirm with Yes

ESET antivirus Removal:

  • This tool can be uninstalled via the Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall

If there are any other left over Folders, Files, Logs then you can delete them on your own.

Please visit the following link to see how to delete old System Restore Points. Please delete all of them and create a new one at this time.

As Java seems to get exploited on a regular basis I advise not using Java if possible but to at least disable java in your web browsers
How do I disable Java in my web browser? - Disable Java

A lot of reading here but if you take the time to read a bit of it you'll see why/how infections and general damage are so easily inflicted on the computer. There is also advice on how to prevent it and keep the system working well. Don't forget about good, solid backups of your data to an external drive that is not connected except when backing up your data. If you leave a backup drive connected and you do get infected it can easily damage, encrypt, delete, or corrupt your backups as well and then you'd lose all data.
Nothing is 100% bulletproof but with a little bit of education you can certainly swing things in your favor.

If you're not currently using Malwarebytes PRO then you may want to consider purchasing the product which can also help greatly reduce the risk of a future infection.

Hi

There is still some infection I suppose...

1) laptop hangs/ freezes suddenly.. Today it is happening frequently

2)The link of our topic is not opening properly. I tried opening it through a new web pagge... Still not opening properly. Similarly my Facebook page.

3) I downloaded VLC player and was able to open my videos. Will send U a clip later as I am messaging you from my phone

4)Have downloaded the latest version of Adobe.

5) I couldn't find any Java control panel or Java plugins to disable Java.

6) I am going out of town today for a week and will not have access to my laptop. Can I request you to please keep the topic OPEN until I get back?

Really appreciate all your help so far. Let's try again to resolve this issue once I am back.

Well I will probably close the topic but once you get back and you're ready to look into it further just send me a PM and I'll reopen the topic.

Please see if the following helps at all.

Please visit each of the following sites and lets reset all of your browsers back to defaults to prevent unexpected issues.

If you are not using one of the browsers but it is installed then you may want to consider uninstalling it as older versions of some software can pose an increase in the potential for an infection to get in.

Hello!!

Thanks for keeping the topic open while I was away.

Ok...So this is what happened today.

In the morning I tried working on the net but whatever the isssue/infection wouldnt let me access any web page. The laptop was hanging too often.

I couldnt even get as far as opening my mailbox before it hung.

Finally my husband, just reformatted the whole thing. Since then it seems to be working fine (as of now).

Now what?

  • Root Admin

Well I suppose that's up to you.  We can do some basic scans to see what is currently installed and if anything sticks out as bad or not.

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop
dds.scr
dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply as an attachment: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
  • You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file and just post it or attach it.

I don't see anything obvious related to any type of malware (would require deeper scans to locate if something were going on)

I see that Bing from Microsoft was installed (nothing wrong with it but if you don't use it you might want to remove it.  No since installing something like that if you don't use it)

Now on the other hand the Event Logs do show that some Microsoft updates are not working.  You should reboot the computer and try to get those items resolved.

Also make sure the HP Framework stops crashing.  It may require an update from HP.

Also make sure you have some type of backup going to backup all your personal data such as pictures and documents.

Let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with then before we close up here.

Thanks

Does reformatting take care of all the issues or are there still chances of some deep rooted malware?

Would you rather that we ran some more scans to be completely sure or Can it be safely assumed that my laptop is all cleaned up now?

The laptop seems to be working fine as of now.

Also is it necessary to have both Anti Malware and Anti Virus? or is one sufficient? Which is better?

Our product is not an antivirus product it is an anti-malware product and yes you do need an antivirus program.  We augment your antivirus if using the Pro version.  We go for the 0-day threats that many antivirus programs miss on a daily basis.  Currently the good thing about our product is that it comes with a lifetime license for use on a Consumer home computer.

How Windows was reinstalled would determine how safe it is.  Removing the partition and creating a new one and then installing Windows would remove all infections.  Simply formatting or reinstalling over the top could potentially leave some types of infection in place.

Oki Thanks! Will keep all your inputs in mind.

Also will buy the Pro Version of MBAM.

If there are any other other tips you would like to share let me know otherwise I suppose we are good to close the topic.

Thank you very much for all your help and inputs. Really appreciate your assistance and efforts.

I wish you good luck!

I suppose the only other item might be to look into possibly using Firefox with NoScript and AdBlock Plus as that is a very powerful combination to thwart continued attacks as it blocks all sorts of operations by default.  Many users find it difficult to understand or to train the settings but if you take the time and are patient I think you'll find yourself asking how you ever lived without it, I know I do.

Take care

No, don't touch Internet Explorer.  You may find that on special instances you want to use IE

Do you have the paid Pro version of MBAM or the Free version?

The paid Pro version allows it to be fully automated with silent updating and scanning.  The free version requires manual updating

Database updates should be done at least twice a day - myself I recommend probably to have it check every 4 hours for updates and then depending on your computer usage and browsing habits maybe do a Quick Scan daily or once a week.
