Have run Malwarebytes but now laptop gets stuck in command prompt!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had a virus which disabled all safe modes. I flashed a disk, booted from there and managed to run Malwarebytes, which seems to have helped.

However, although Windows boots, and I can enter my password, it then opens up command prompt with the following message:

"C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\avdsdoij.exe is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

Can you help? I'm running Windows Vista by the way.

Thanks!

Hi Ron,

Currently I'm unable to access windows on the affected computer so am unable to download and run the suggested programmes.

After running Malwarebytes, and seemingly clearing my laptop of the virus, this is what now happens:

I turn the laptop on and windows loads to the enter user password stage; I'm then able to type in my password and swpe my finger over the finger print reader; then the DOS command prompt appears with the statement in my original post.

Do you have any suggestions as to how to run the required software? Perhaps saving to a usb disk and loading from there? If so I'd probably need a little help as to how to run the flash disk from DOS.

Thanks for your help though - very much appreciated.

Neddy

If it's still in the DOS screen and will let you type please try typing EXPLORER.EXE and then press the Enter key and see if that works or not.

If all you're getting to is this DOS screen then how did you run MBAM as said in your first post?

Can you take a picture of it with a phone and post the screen shot?

Hi Ron,

thanks for your reply and apologies for the time it takes to get back to you. As my computer is now out of action I've limited time on a friends. However it's the weekend now so I should be able to reply to your posts a lot quicker.

OK, so what happened is I had a virus that wouldn't let me run windows in any of the safe modes. So, I found some instructions on the net (I can't remember where but can find out if you need me to) and flashed a 'Mini XP' image to a disc. Then I did this:

 - Booted the laptop from teh 'Mini XP' disc

 - Loaded and updated my free version of Malwerebytes (which was also on the disc - hence I could run it)

 - It then found about 4 items

 - I restarted the computer

 - I now get to the Windows log-on, where I can enter my password, or swipe my finger print

 - Then, after a few seconds, this is what I see:

When I type in EXPLORER.EXE, it just returns the C:\Windows\System32 lines. Sorry but I'm not very good in DOS.

Thanks for your help.

Ed

Hi Ron,

Something vey weird happened! Having left my laptop, after typing EXPLORER.EXE and finishing writing the above posts, I went back to my laptop and windows has loaded, with the DOS windoe still showing. Really strange.

Anyway, I didn't want you to investigate it any further if there's no need.

I'm now running Malwarebytes full scan on C: so I'll see what that brings up.

Very strange! What are your thoughts? And apologies if these repeated posts aren't good - I just wanted you to know what's going on as soon as it happened!

Would you like me to take a photo and post it?

As ever, thanks.

Ed

And here's the attach - with a quick question first: if I had been a subscriber to Malwarebytes Pro, would this have stopped me getting infected in the first place? I struggle to see the value in my current software (McAfee) although that's my personal opinion of course!

Thanks again for your help Ron. Here's the 'Attach' log:

  • Root Admin

Well if you're able to you could try uninstalling the McAfee antivirus for now.

You can use the following tool to help uninstall it.

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

If you're able to run the following on the box then please do.  If not then please let me know what the current state is.  Only Safe Mode, or other issues running stuff.

You can copy the file over via CD or USB stick.

Please visit this webpage and read the ComboFix User's Guide:

  • Once you've read the article and are ready to use the program you can download it directly from the link below.
  • Important! - Please make sure you save combofix to your desktop and do not run it from your browser
  • Direct download link for: ComboFix.exe
  • Please make sure you disable your security applications before running ComboFix.
  • Once Combofix has completed it will produce and open a log file.  Please be patient as it can take some time to load.
  • Please attach that log file to your next reply.
  • If needed the file can be located here:  C:\combofix.txt
  • NOTE: If you receive the message "illegal operation has been attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", just reboot the computer.

It was able to find and remove a few items for us.

Let me have you run another antivirus scan now.

dr_web_cureit_zpse80d87bf.jpg

  • Please download Dr.Web CureIt! antivirus and save it to your computer. The file size is in excess of 100MB
  • NOTE: Free usage of Dr.Web CureIt! for business purposes is illegal.
  • Internet Explorer may show a warning when downloading - the file is safe to download from the provided link.
  • Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts while scanning.
  • Once the scans have completed please re-enable your antivirus.
  • If using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO you can right click over the tray icon and disable the Protection Modules
  • If needed you can also temporarily disable it from starting with Windows
  • Temporarily turn off any other security add-ons or applications you may also have.
  • Once you have downloaded Dr.Web CureIt! you should right click over it and choose Properties and verify it has a Digital Signature.
  • If it does not have a Digital Signature then do not run it.
  • Close all open programs including all Web browsers and then double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the installer.
  • You should have your User Account Control (UAC) enabled for improved security and which should then produce a dialog box asking for approval to run the installer.
  • Click on the Yes button to start the installer.
  • Click OK to scan your computer in the Enhanced Protection Mode
  • Click on the check box to agree to participate in their software improvement program.
  • Then if needed choose your Language by clicking on the small globe like icon in the upper right corner by the wrench.
  • Then click on the Continue button and then click on the Select objects for scanning link just below the "Start scanning" button.
  • Place a check mark on all the items except for Temporary files and System restore points - those items should not have a check mark on them.
  • Then click on the Start scanning button.
  • If a threat is found you can click on the Action column in the program.
  • Your options will be Cure or Ignore
  • If you see an item that you are absolutely sure is OK, then un-check the check box for that item, otherwise keep it on Cure.
  • Then click on the Neutralize button.
  • Once completed click on the green Open Report link. It will open the report in NOTEPAD
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called Cureit.log
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit!
  • Reboot your computer to allow files that were in use to be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, attach the log Cureit.log you saved previously in your next reply.
  • Re-Enable your antivirus and other security programs when all done.
