White Trader - Can not remove from my system.

Greetings. Thanks in advance for any your assistance you can provide - it is very much appreciated.

Background:

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that when I boot up my PC (Dell PC, Windows Vista Home Edition, Version 6 (Build 6002, Service Pack 2)), an icon would appear on the taskbar with a ballon message stating "White Trader. You didn't use White Trader Program for a long time". The icon doesn't appear immediately, it appears to show up a minute or so after other items have loaded (ZoneAlarm, PC Tools Spyware Doctor). The icon looks like the Windows security icon but with differnt colors. If I don't click on the icon, then it eventually goes away but then an icon appears on my desktop that is an Internet Explorer icon with the properties URL = http://www.whitetrader.com. The first time I received this icon on the taskbar, I thought it was a Windows message and clicked on the icon. When you do that, it brings up a browser and takes you to whitetrader.com. If you delete the desktop icon, then the next time you boot, it reappears (after the taskbar icon shows up).

So far I haven't had any issues with using my PC. It appears to be functioning properly but I can't get rid of this White Trader thing.

So far, I have ran the following utilities:

PC Tools Spyware Doctor - Version 8.9.9.623 (Note is is my "active" anti-virus SW) - Ran quick scan & deep scan. Reported clean.

Malwarebytes - Version 1.75.0.130 (This is passive and I run manually) - Ran quick scan and deep scan. Reported clean

Malwarebytes Rootkit Utility - Version 1.06.0.1003 (Updating DB today) - Ran both at reg boot and in Safe mode. Reported clean

TDSSKiller - Version 2.8.17.0 - Ran both at reg boot and in Safe mode. I also checked "Loaded Modules", "Verify file digital signatures", "Detect TDLFS file system" options. Reported clean

CCleaner - Version v4.02.4115

Hitman Pro - Version 3.7. This did return some results from the scan but I have to admit I didn't understand any of the entries or explanations so I did not take any action. I can post the results from this scan if needed.

I have also, per this forums instructions downloaded DDS and executed it from my desktop

Please download and run RogueKiller 32 Bit to your desktop.

RogueKiller 64 Bit <---use this one for 64 bit systems

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.

For Vista or Windows 7-8, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.

When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

(please don't put logs in code or quotes)

Thank you in advance for your help. Question - do I need to disable my firewall and/or Anti-Virus SW in addition to closing out all appls to run RogueKiller 32 Bit?

I've attempted to run RogueKiller twice and both times it appears to hang. I've have a screen shot to show you where this is occuring but couldn't figure out how to include an attachment. It appears to be hanging on the Registry Tab, with the status description: "Searching for Policy Hijacks -> (HJ INPROC)"

It appears to get to this point in a few minutes but I've waited more than 30 minutes each time it get to this point and the status bar has not moved any further along. Each time I restarted the system to try again and I could not find a log file on the desktop.

Try it in safe mode, if it still hangs....do this instead\also:

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.

AdwCleaner is a reliable removal tool for Adware, Foistware, toolbars and potentially unwanted programs.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :

· Adwares (software ads)

· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)

· Toolbars

· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

It works with a Search and Deletion method. It can be easily uninstalled using the "Uninstall" mode.

1. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
   
2. Now click on the Search tab.
   
3. Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.
   

Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.

Please look over what was found......especially any folders, we're going to permanently delete it all in the next step....if there's something you may want to keep...please let me know and I'll explain to why it shouldn't be on your system.

If you see AVG Secure Search being targeted for deletion, Here's Why and Here. You can always Reinstall it.

Please note that Antivir Webguard uses ASK Toolbar as part of its web security. If you remove ASK by using Adwcleaner, Antivir Webguard will no longer work properly. Therefore, if you use this program please use the instructions below to access the options screen where you should enable /DisableAskDetections before using AdwCleaner.

You can click on the question mark (?) in the upper left corner of the program and then click on Options. You will then be presented with a dialog where you can disable various detections. These options are described below:

/DisableAskDetection - This option disables Ask Toolbar detection.

I tried RogueKiller in Safe mode but it still hung at the same place.   I tried to execute AdwCleaner, also in Safe Mode, but kept getting the following error message.

 

Windows cannot find 'C:\AdwCleaner[R?].txt'.  make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.   This '?' is a number, stated at 1 when I first attempted to run AdwCleaner and bumped up each time I retried.

 

I then reboot in regular mode and was able to run AdwCleaner.   Following is the log:

Then........

 

 Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.

Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.

The tool will open and start scanning your system.

Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

I ran ComboFix but accidently closed out the log file in Notepad before copying into clipboard and now can't find where it is stored.   Where is the log file typically stored?  I did find two txt files that appear to be from ComboFix (ComboFix.txt & ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt) but when I attempt to open these files, I get the following message:

 

Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.

 

Should the log file still be on my system and if so, where would it be typically be stored?  If it isn't on my system anymore, should I run ComboFix again?

Well, appears my problem is fixed!   I just rebooted and am no longer getting the White Trader message or icon appearing on my desktop.   Included below is the combofix.txt file in case you see anything else that needs to be done.

 

Thank you so very much for your help and all you do on this forum (I have noticed that you help quite often).  

 

Final question - do I keep all these tools on my desktop?  Can I move them to a folder?   Also, are there any tools that I should uninstall?

A little clean up to do....

 

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)

 

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

 

Copy and paste next command in the field:

 

ComboFix /uninstall

 

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

 

 

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files,  hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

 

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)

If you used DeFogger to disable your CD Emulation drivers, please re-enable them.

Please download OTC to your desktop.

Double-click OTC to run it. (Vista and up users, please right click on OTC and select "Run as an Administrator")

Click on the CleanUp! button and follow the prompts.

(If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.)

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process, choose Yes.

After the reboot all the tools we used should be gone.

Note: Some more recently created tools may not yet be removed by OTC. Feel free to manually delete any tools it leaves behind.

 

Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.

IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

MrC,

I've completed all steps outline.  Thanks again for your help.  

 

However, shortly after completing all those steps, I was simply using IE to browse and only at the Yahoo site.   After a reading a couple of articles/stories, I got a new Window from my ISP (Time Warner) stating that botnet activity was captured between my system and external servers.   I called TWC to verify and they did verify the message was legit.   They stated I had to clean my system of malware / viruses.   Was there anything we did to solve the White Trader issue that could have trigger this?  I didn't go to any sites outside of Yahoo.

 

Appreciate any insight you might have.   I'm currently running full scans of my anti-virus / anti-malware SW packages but guess I'm surprised I got this message from TWC as I thought my system was a clean as it has been in quite sometime.

Nothing on the system was found that could trigger that.

I've actually received warnings like that from my isp and my system hasn't been compromised.

 

Lets run MBAR to be sure:

 

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE

 

• Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.

• Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe

• Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.

• Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.

• Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.

• Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.

• When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Note:

If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:

Internet access

Windows Update

Windows Firewall

If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the fixdamage tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot. It's located in the Plugins folder which is in the MBAR folder.

 

Just run fixdamage.exe.

 

Verify that they are now functioning normally.
