Infected-Spigot Yahoo redirect toolbar from Iobit

Recommended Posts

MrC, do you know what the problem was so that I can avoid making the same mistakes?

Be careful what you download off the net, most of it is loaded with all kinds of adware and toolbars.

I still see the Best Buy PC app on my desktop, but I don't want to click on it for fear that my computer will implode. Kidding.

Uninstall it form your add/remove programs > Best Buy pc app

Whatever suggestions you have would be appreciated.

When we're done I'll give you a link.

Also, should I periodically run scanners like AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal or only bring out those big guns when needed?

Yes, you can run them but be careful, create a new system restore point first.

And should I remove all Iobit freeware?? I'll bet yes. I already killed and buried Advanced System Care and Iobit Malware Removal. I still have Smart Defrag, however.

Yes I would.

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • Do Not Attach It!!!

I gotta head to the bed MrC. I'm fading fast. Way past my bed time. Thank you again for all your efforts. If there are any other steps I need to take, I'll check tomorrow for fresh posts and follow up.

And did I say you rock?/!! Check the till -- a deposit has been made.

Is watching free TV online via streaming considered a "download?" I don't illegally download music or movies. Pirate Bay is like a teeming den of iniquity for viruses so far as I'm concerned. I avoid it like the plague. I do watch a certain free TV channel though across the pond. 99.9 percent of the people on this forum know what I'm talking about. It's my one guilty pleasure.

My grandfather used to say, "Thems who don't look sometimes gets took." I'd like to avoid future infections so maybe I need to pay Hulu for a monthly sub rather than free streaming.

I wouldn't know, that's up to you.

Java 7 Update 9 <----please update > should be Update 10

Please check for updates on these:

Adobe Reader 10.1.4 Adobe Reader out of Date!

Mozilla Firefox 6.0 Firefox out of Date!

You have out dated programs on the system which are vulnerable to malware.

Please update or uninstall them

Info on doing that can be found in my Preventive Maintenance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little clean up to do....
Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)
Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"
Copy and paste next command in the field:
ComboFix /uninstall
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
cf2.jpg
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point
(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)
---------------------------------
Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com
http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)
Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.
Any questions...please post back.
Hi MrC. I do have questions. Please pardon my ignorance:
1. Delete your system restore files and create a new restore point:
By system restore files, does this mean all the log files I created last night?
2. I thought Internet browsers, Java, Acrobat, etc. updated automatically. How can I have outdated stuff? I've looked at this before and searched their sites for updates and there's usually something that says XXXXXX installs updates automatically or similar language. How would I get an update then?
3. Should I also change all my passwords to be safe?
Thank you again.
No..................
Delete system restore points:
Create a new system restore point:
There should be settings in the program that you can configure to do that.
example>>>Java:
3. Should I also change all my passwords to be safe?
Yes, that's always a good idea.
Never mind on Adobe and Java. I figured out how to get those updates manually. I'll work on FF next. Sure I'll get it.
The default checkbox for Java said "Download the Ask Toolbar." Are you kidding me???? How many ways can you no (rhetorical question).
One more question MrC (and thanks for your patience). The preventive maintenance page contains a number of useful looking programs, such as ATF cleaner, Cookienator and Secunia Personal Software Inspector. How can I be sure these don't have malware/adware attached to them? Due to my recent experience, I'm loathe to download freeware.
Thank you again for all your help and time!
