Manual Updates

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have seen a few posts about manual updates but some posts have different location and procedures to get a manual update. Please could someone say where to get the update and best way to apply it.

In the meantime, I have downloaded mbam-rules.exe from some post link and run the exe but it says over 52 days old rules when I start MBAM app and I would prefer base install to be a little more up to date (a week or 2 old) before daring to connecting to the internet just in case.

Thanks

Hello and welcome, tomhass:

Here is the preferred method, quoted from the FAQ page:

ISSUE: I need to get the latest database onto a computer that cannot access the Internet.

SOLUTION: You can manually copy the database from a working computer using a flash drive or CD onto the infected PC. Our database file is stored in the following locations.

Windows XP and 2000

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

You can also download a manual update from here - NOTE: This manual update will always be way behind in version level compared to updates from within the program

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=10138&view=findpost&p=49525

I assume you might be asking because you have an infected computer and the malware is preventing internet access?

If so, you might also find some helpful information here.

Hope this helps!

Hi, tomhass:

Yes, I think it is the case that when one manually changes the rules.ref file, it doesn't appear to have updated in the GUI.

Only when one updates from within the program will it show the most current database version.

If you look at some of the many related "update" threads here, I am pretty sure you'll find a post from the MBAM staff that confirms this.

Also, please have a look at that other section to which I provided the link, as it may further assist you in running MBAM on the infected machine.

And, of course, you are always welcome to seek malware removal help via the many, excellent support options.

If you would like expert assistance with cleaning your system, there are 3 support options from which to choose:

  • Option 1 -- Free, Expert advice in the Malware Removal Forum
  • Option 2 -- Paying customer using MBAM PRO -- Contact MBAM Support via email
  • Option 3 -- Premium, Fee-Based Support

OPTION 1

As we don't deal with malware removal in this General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum, you need to start a topic in the Malware Removal forum so that a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • First, please print out, read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete.
  • Then please post a NEW topic here.
  • When posting your new thread, please make sure that, under "options", you select Track this topic and choose Immediate Email Notification, so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.
  • One of the expert helpers there will give you free, one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer such as (Install/Uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.

NOTE: Please DO NOT post back to ("bump") your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies. If you reply to your own post, helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

  • o If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
    Or
o You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

OPTION 2

Alternatively, as a paying customer using MBAM PRO, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org or here.

OPTION 3

If you would like to use the Malwarebytes Premium Services (Comprehensive solutions to all your computer support needs -- from installation and set-up to troubleshooting and tune-ups), please go to the Malwarebytes Premium Services support site.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as it is possible.

Good luck!
