System Tool

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am infected with the malware "System Tool." I can not run my malwarebytes program, every time I try to run it i get a small popup in my system tray that says "application can not be executed, the file avastSvc.exe is infected. Please activate your antivirus software"

I try to run hijack this and get the same popup. I try to run OTL and get the same popup. All of my .exe files seem to be blocked. I have tried renaming my mbam .exe file as well but that did not work either.

What should I do? thank you.

I had the same problem. I had to turn off my computer and reboot manually after only a few seconds to get it in safe mode; the F8 option would not work. I ran Malware Malbytes, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. All identified different problems. I rebooted, updated all three programs, and got into safe mode again, manually. Malbytes and Spybot once again identified more infections. Everything seems to be clean now, but when I run Malbytes in full -scan mode, the computer crashes. It does okay in quick scan or in full-scan while in safe mode. It crashes when it hits the Acer mobility center. I'm trying to find a solution for that.

I have scanned in safe mode, and found no infections. The problem is only occurring when I am in normal mode.

Hello structure! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the thread until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

Step 1

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

  1. rkill.exe
  2. rkill.com
  3. rkill.scr
  4. WiNlOgOn.exe
  5. uSeRiNiT.exe
  6. iExplore.exe

Please post the log in your next reply.

Note: The log can be found at the root of your installed hard drive entitled rkill.log

Step 2

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. RKill log
  2. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log

Ok I was able to get one of the rtskills to run. It seemed to stop the spyware virus, however after running a full system scan with malwarebytes, I did not find any virus.

Here are the requested logs. I will attempt to restart my computer and see if the virus is gone, if not I will repeat the steps while waiting for more instructions.

thanks

Ok, something strange has happened after restart. Virus was still there so I ran RTKill again and got a log saying it killed avast, which I thought was strange because that is my antivirus. So I restarted my computer again, and avast seemed to catch the program (defogger as in the original rtskill) and moved it to a vault. However I am unsure how to double check logs or see exactly for sure what file was moved.

I am updating my malwarebytes to the latest version, and I will update my avast antivirus and run some scans once more after I restart.

Do you read my instructions?

First:

Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.

Take only what I tell you no more, no less, because otherwise I can not track what happens to your system and I am useless.

Second:

Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

There is a reason to want a quick scan, rather than a full scan. For Quick Scan, the program uses their advanced heuristics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuristic_analysis

If you want to help, stop and let me know what's going on there.

The virus seems to have gone away after avast seemingly removed it to the vault.

I will post quick scan results anyway:
