win32 generic host process problems + possible virus

Recommended Posts

Hello Malawarebyes, today I am fighting with a strange problem. Eveything started with an error message: "Win32 generic host process has encountered a problem ...". :)

After that the system became rather unstable. At the same time (but just few times) firefox was hijacked to a malicious website.

I searched the web for 'win32 generic host problem' but found solutions that did not work like registry fixes. This problem appeared few times right at start-up. I then restarted in safe-mode and played with windows services trying to understand which was the bugged one.

Currently the 'win32 generic host' error does not show any more, nor firefox hijackes, however windows stop loading many services at start-up and I have to do that manually (e.g., DHCP service, Themes, Audio... basically everything run by svchost).

Finally, and this is the suspicious behavior:

- 'windows firewall' does not want to start (error);

- I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes' Anti-malware but it does not run: clicking on the icon nothing happens; :)

- I also tried Spybot, but got the same problem. :)

I read on an old post (2006) that some viruses can detect and disable anti-spyware software.

My "AntiVir personal" does not find anything so I downloaded the exec rootalyz-0.2.1.35 and tried a deep scan, but it found nothing.

Do you have any suggestion ? Why Spybot does not run ? Does it require a service that is now disabled?

I can add that I have XP-SP3.

Thank you so much!!
