Another victim - MBAM won't run / search results hijacked

Recommended Posts

Looks like I've got some malware in the laptop, but judging by the other posts it's not uncommon.

My symptoms:

1) Can't run MBAM or Spybot Search and Destroy (AVG anti-virus runs just fine and does not find any issues)

2) Hijacked search results: google, bing

3) Windows dialog box at start-up (and occasionally at other times) indicating 'Spooler subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close'

What I've done so far:

1) Run MBAM and Spybot S&D after rebooting in safe mode. MWB found a couple of issues but did not fix the problem.

2) Followed procedure in 2009 Forum post re. TDL2 Rootkit. Downloaded and ran RootRepeal. It did not find any of the listed suspect files.

3) Downloaded and ran Rootkit Unhooker looking at 'drivers, stealth code, files and code hooks' The report follows.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Hello MGRail

Welcome to Malwarebytes.

=====================

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit.

This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you still want to clean it please do the following

===================

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hello again and thanks. Our laptop appears to be back operating as desired, and we've taken some other suggested actions to protect outselves online.

After that I thought I would just run RKUunhooker on our desktop computer as it shares the same internet connection with the laptop.

The report - results are below - concludes with the same ominous message that it did with the laptop: !!POSSIBLE ROOTKIT ACTIVITY DETECTED!! =)

Can you take a quick look at this report and let me know if anything looks suspicious?

Thanks
