SteveK1 Posted September 27, 2010 Author ID:319482 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Hi Elise,Thanks for your efforts to help me. First the problems I've been having on an older laptop with windows XP:1) Everytime I do a google search Avast anti-virus tells me it has blocked a malicious url of clikpixelabn.com/wholebunch of gibberish 2) redirects from google search pages to sites that were not the ones clicked (this was mostly through internet explorer)3) drastic slow down in the machine in general4) disconnect and inability to reconnect wirelessly to my netwrk. THe only solution is to reboot and then things are ok for awhile, 30 to 45 minutes.5) opera and chrome becoming so unstable and crashing so frequently as to be unusable. They had no problems before 3 weeks ago. 6) I had to post this from a different machine. The affected machine lost connection again after about 30 minutes. My attempts to post a reply got a "The cononection was reset" error everytime.These are the main issues I can think of now.I have another newer machine with windows 7 and none of these network issues are present there. The XP machine worked fine (if occassionaly moderately slow) up until a few weeks ago when a fake anti-virus pop got through. I thught regular Malewarebytes scans and Avast scans took care of it but the problems persist.Now to the logs: OTL: OTL logfile created on: 9/27/2010 4:53:59 PM - Run 1OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.14.1 Folder = C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\DesktopWindows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 3 (Version = 5.1.2600) - Type = NTWorkstationInternet Explorer (Version = 8.0.6001.18702)Locale: 00000409 | Country: United States | Language: ENU | Date Format: M/d/yyyy2.00 Gb Total Physical Memory | 1.00 Gb Available Physical Memory | 63.00% Memory free3.00 Gb Paging File | 3.00 Gb Available in Paging File | 81.00% Paging File freePaging file location(s): C:\pagefile.sys 1536 3072 [binary data]%SystemDrive% = C: | %SystemRoot% = C:\WINDOWS | %ProgramFiles% = C:\Program FilesDrive C: | 55.84 Gb Total Space | 9.04 Gb Free Space | 16.20% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFSD: Drive not present or media not loadedE: Drive not present or media not loadedF: Drive not present or media not loadedG: Drive not present or media not loadedH: Drive not present or media not loadedI: Drive not present or media not loadedComputer Name: DELL9300LAPTOPCurrent User Name: SteveLogged in as Administrator.Current Boot Mode: NormalScan Mode: All usersCompany Name Whitelist: OnSkip Microsoft Files: OnFile Age = 90 DaysOutput = StandardQuick Scan========== Processes (SafeList) ==========PRC - [2010/09/27 16:52:18 | 000,575,488 | ---- | M] (OldTimer Tools) -- C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Desktop\OTL.exePRC - [2010/09/14 17:59:44 | 000,910,296 | ---- | M] (Mozilla Corporation) -- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exePRC - [2010/09/07 10:12:02 | 002,838,912 | ---- | M] (AVAST Software) -- C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastUI.exePRC - [2010/09/07 10:11:59 | 000,040,384 | ---- | M] (AVAST Software) -- C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastSvc.exePRC - [2010/06/23 13:52:56 | 002,435,592 | ---- | M] (Check Point Software Technologies LTD) -- C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exePRC - [2010/06/23 13:51:30 | 001,043,968 | ---- | M] (Check Point Software Technologies LTD) -- C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exePRC - [2010/05/26 08:35:18 | 000,493,032 | ---- | M] (Check Point Software Technologies) -- C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\ISWSVC.exePRC - [2010/05/26 08:35:14 | 000,730,600 | ---- | M] (Check Point Software Technologies) -- C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\ForceField.exePRC - [2008/06/24 15:19:40 | 000,068,856 | ---- | M] (Google Inc.) -- C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exePRC - [2008/05/21 17:26:10 | 000,451,896 | ---- | M] (Pure Networks, Inc.) -- C:\Program Files\Pure Networks\Network Magic\nmapp.exePRC - [2008/05/16 06:11:44 | 000,648,504 | ---- | M] (Pure Networks, Inc.) -- C:\Program Files\Common Files\Pure Networks Shared\Platform\nmsrvc.exePRC - [2008/05/16 06:11:44 | 000,648,504 | ---- | M] (Pure Networks, Inc.) -- C:\Program Files\Common Files\Pure Networks Shared\Platform\nmctxth.exePRC - [2008/04/13 19:12:19 | 001,033,728 | ---- | M] (Microsoft Corporation) -- C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exePRC - [2007/04/03 16:18:08 | 001,516,584 | ---- | M] (Cisco Systems, Inc.) -- C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\cvpnd.exePRC - [2005/09/15 22:45:30 | 001,720,320 | ---- | M] (TOSHIBA CORPORATION.) -- C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosBtMng.exePRC - [2005/08/26 14:04:30 | 002,129,920 | ---- | M] (TOSHIBA CORPORATION.) -- C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosBtProc.exePRC - [2005/08/17 10:59:34 | 000,290,816 | ---- | M] (TOSHIBA CORPORATION.) -- C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosA2dp.exePRC - [2005/08/16 23:11:28 | 000,065,536 | ---- | M] (TOSHIBA CORPORATION.) -- C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosBtHid.exePRC - [2005/08/09 16:30:10 | 000,311,296 | ---- | M] (TOSHIBA CORPORATION.) -- C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosOBEX.exePRC - [2005/07/27 16:11:16 | 000,217,088 | ---- | M] (TOSHIBA CORPORATION.) -- C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosBtHSP.exePRC - [2005/07/14 11:58:42 | 000,073,728 | ---- | M] (EMC Dantz) -- C:\Program Files\Dantz\Retrospect 7.0\retrorun.exePRC - [2004/10/30 14:59:54 | 000,385,024 | ---- | M] (Intel Corporation) -- C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\iFrmewrk.exePRC - [2004/09/07 16:12:32 | 000,225,353 | ---- | M] (Intel Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Elise Posted September 28, 2010 ID:319790 Share Posted September 28, 2010 Hi Steve, unfortunately you have a nasty rootkit on board. Before starting the cleaning process, please read this information.BACKDOOR WARNING------------------------------One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the infection has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.COMBOFIX---------------Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:BleepingcomputerForoSpywareDisable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
SteveK1 Posted September 28, 2010 Author ID:320001 Share Posted September 28, 2010 Elise,Well that sounds bad. I understand the unreliable nature of certifying the machine clear of malware and will consider the options recommended. For now I would like to try to clean the computer and see if that makes things better for now. As such I have run Combofix and the log is attached. There were a few unusual things doing it but I assume they were supposed to happen. It rebooted the computer but never shut down completely. I had to do a hard reboot to start back up. But eventually I got a log so:ComboFix 10-09-27.05 - Steve 09/28/2010 13:10:14.1.1 - x86Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1561 [GMT -5:00]Running from: c:\documents and settings\Steve\Desktop\ComboFix.exeAV: avast! Elise Posted September 28, 2010 ID:320072 Share Posted September 28, 2010 Hello again, please let me know how things are running after the following steps.CF-SCRIPT-------------We need to execute a CF-script.Close any open browsers.Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Click Start > Run and in the box that opens type notepad and press enter. Copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:DDS::uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exeRefering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exeWhen finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply. SteveK1 Posted September 28, 2010 Author ID:320148 Share Posted September 28, 2010 Elise,Well boot time went from "I'll come back later" to "wow!?" So that's good. I re-enabled avast and am no longer getting the message that CLikpixeladm.com is trying to redirect. I haven't been browsing with this computer so I'm not sure of any other performance issues. I haven't tried anything with it except to fix it. I've also been shutting it off between fix sessions to keep it off the internet until it was as safe as we could make it. Am I good to test it out and try using it in normal ways now? I'll leave it up and see if the network connection is lost and let you know. After running the CFScript I got the log (and saved it to desk top) but lost my entire desktop. I had to use task manager to log off and back in and everything seemed ok. Here is the latest log:ComboFix 10-09-27.05 - Steve 09/28/2010 17:12:06.2.1 - x86Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1371 [GMT -5:00]Running from: c:\documents and settings\Steve\Desktop\ComboFix.exeCommand switches used :: c:\documents and settings\Steve\Desktop\CFScript.txtAV: avast! SteveK1 Posted September 29, 2010 Author ID:320179 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Elise,So far the one hitch I have noticed is the computer won't shut down. It hangs at the "windows is shutting down" screen and never actually turns all the way off. ANy ideas on what could be causing that? Maybe something we turned off during the processes or an indication I still have a problem?Steve Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Elise Posted September 29, 2010 ID:320307 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Hi, I see in your event viewer log some errors that may point to disk problems. It is possible this causes the shut down problem.Click Start > Run, type chkdsk /r and press enter. Type Y and press enter to schedule the scan for next reboot. Now restart your computer and let the disk check run unhindered. Note - this may take some time. Let me know if the problem still persists afterwards.UPDATE JAVA------------------Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.Look for "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)".Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.Select your Platform: "Windows".Select your Language: "Multi-language".Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".Click Continue and the page will refresh.Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE-------------------------------------------Please launch MBAM and update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.Then click on the Scan button.If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Elise Posted September 30, 2010 ID:320716 Share Posted September 30, 2010 Hi, this error seems related to Nero. I found this topic, this might be worth a shot.On my system, the specific 7E error in the fs_rec.sys driver was caused by Ahead Software's Nero/InCD CDRW packet writing software. The latest update to Nero download package #3, dated 9/1/03, available from the Ahead website, fixed the problem for me. Does your error reference the fs_rec.sys driver? If not, it has a different cause. If it does and you don't have InCD installed, but use some other packet writing software for CDRW's, you might investigate if that software is the cause of the problem on your system.I hope this solution works for you. On the bright side, it is not malware related. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!![*]Keep your other software up to date as wellSoftware does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.[*]Stay up to date!The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. SteveK1 Posted October 3, 2010 Author ID:322075 Share Posted October 3, 2010 Elise,Thank you for all your help. I have re-enabled fogger and deleted all the programs and log files created. I do have a router, a software firewall (Zonealarm) and an antivirus (Avast free). I have added Superantispyware to my list of other anti malware and will head the advice given in your last post. I will be using an imaging program ASAP to make a backup of this new clean drive for future issues. I have never heard of MVP host files but will look at them to learn and use them to my benefit. I really appreciate what you have done and all the hard work you put in here to help us all. If I can do anything for your please let me know. My deepest and sincerest thanksSteve Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
