it wont let me update windows because

''the file c:\windows\system32\kernal32.dll is open or in use by another application''

ive rebooted and not ran anything but still have the same result

how can i find what is running that i need to close?

Please make sure your MSSE is disabled when starting the install.

HI elsie I've (finally) updated to service pack 3 and updated java.

Microsoft security essentials ran a quick scan this morning and found a ramnit.b thingy, although it seems to have removed it again. Is this normal?

Please run a complete scan with MSSE as well. Most likely it was already in quarantine/system restore however.
