The malwarebytes set-up will create the scanner.exe program and after it opens and I click on 'Scan', it runs about 10 sec and disapears. When I click on the icon to try to run it again, a message comes up & says something like the 'filepath cannot be found or you may not have permission', but when I look in explorer, the file the there in C:/programs.

The Hijack set-up on the desktop just blinks and nothing shows up. But in control panel, it shows a small program <500kb file.

Please look at my Previous Post in another section of the forums. This all started on 9-12, with a down load from the internet and Panda antiviruspro 2010, and the introduction of wisdstr.exe and braviax.exe and ~.exe. I have got then removed with a couple of scans. I found out 9-17, if I re-connect to the internet, there is something running in the background that randomly opens websites, creates lots of items in the History folder and puts more trojans, virus, etc back on my hard drive.

Today 9-18, I have cleaned the hard drive with the scanners and not re-connected to the internet. Drive seems clean, other than the (2) set-up files not running. And there must be something lurking in an executable file or in the registry. Where do I go from here? Thank you in advance!

Welcome to Malwarebytes!!!! :)

Please download Win32kDiag.exe by AD to your Desktop.

Double-click on Win32kDiag.exe.

It will create Win32kDiag.txt on your Desktop.

In your next reply, please include the log. Thanks

REPLY: Not sure why your msg is also in the reply - something in settings? Win32Diag.txt log is attached. It looks like it didn't run. Also, I downloaded MBAM on 9-20 from CNET, ran it, and the log file is attached. Thanks for looking at this. ken

Before i send you away i would like to do an online scan.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.

3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.

Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.

  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases

[*]Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.

[*]Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

[*]Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

[*]Click View report... at the bottom.

[*] Click the Save report... button.

    KasReport.png

[*] Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

KasReport: .txt wasn't available in the dropdown, so I saved in .html & copy - pasted here. One of the files detected was in MGtools which is a program I ran during my repair process recently. Gasfky... is a file name i have seen recently but can't remember the circumstances. Do these quarantined files need to be deleted? Is Kaspersky in a temp folder, or how do I remove it from my system now? Thanks, ken s.

PS Another question: How many processes should be running typically? I see 48 in my Task Manager right now.

What is this file?

C:\MGtools.exe

You can go ahead and delete it.

WE need to uninstall ComboFix

go to Start ---> Run ---> Type ComboFix /u and press Enter.

How is everything running?

Thanks again for staying on top of my posts. Running good now.

MGTools is a program I downloaded & used from one of the forums in MajorGeeks. I just searched Google and saw something about that program that didn't sound real good.

Start/run couldn't run combofix. I did a search on C & D and found only .txt files to delete.

Then its likely a false positive on the file.

You don't have ComboFix on your desktop anymore?

No, Combofix is not on the desktop. sreng2, CCleaner, superantispyware, root repeal, MBAM, win32kdiag, and Hijackthis are on my desktop. I'm thinking I could delete them, because if there is a future problem, I'd want to download the latest versions.

Still running fine. Thanks.

You can remove them all, but i would probably keep either SAS OR mbam.

Do you still have a C:\ComboFix folder present?

Hello, No C:\ComboFix folder. There is a C:\Qoobox folder with some quarantined files. Is that a Microsoft folder or did it come from one of the scan/repair programs? What do I do with it and the files in it? Thanks, Ken

That folder is created when you run ComboFix.

You can delete this folder though

C:\Qoobox

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:

1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".

2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr

4. Click "OK".

5. Click the "More Options" Tab.

6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.

  1. Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  2. Here are two great Preventive programs

Reply starts here: Qoobox folder is now deleted. Then, I completed the two steps you said to do. System Restore Point worked exactly as you said. On removing old restore points - When I did Start, Run, Cleanmgr - the more Options window did not come up at first, instead a small window that said 'Select Drive' came up and the choices were C or D. When I selected C, a few items with check boxes in front came up with Temp Internet files checked. When I selected D, then the more options came up, and the choice to remove all but the latest restore point was there and used it. Everything is OK. Thanks again. Ken S.
