Unable to run ANYTHING

Recommended Posts

This problem has been driving me crazy the past few days. I consider myself pretty tech savvy, but I'm at my last end here.

I am unable to run a majority of programs. I am unable to run hijackthis, mbam, etc. I am going to give as detailed of a description as I can though:

Running WinXP w/ SP2

-Can't open regedit/msconfig/etc

-Cant run symantec, mbam, firefox, adaware, spybot, etc (says the file cannot be found basically)

-Am able to use IE, but google search links redirect to random pages

-Am unable to run chkdsk. it says it in use and ask if i want it to be ran on restart, so i hit yes. have tried doing it and restarting 3 or 4 times and doesnt run. i ran it successfully last night from the windows recovery console however

-Am unable to execute majority of programs from safe mode with command prompt(says access is denied) And I am running as the administrator. this includes mbam

I was able to briefly get mbam to run, I thought whatever I have may just be blocking .exe files so i renamed mbam.exe to mbam.bat and it actually started. It ran for about 20-30 seconds and closed. I was also able to run trend micro housecall in safe mode with networking. it got all the way through the scan and when it started to try and clean the files it froze. it was infected with 5 different malicious files.

i've also noticed that when i click on symantec, spybot, etc. a command prompt very quickly flashes on the screen (about half a second) and the last part of the path is sysfader.exe. it also shows up in the running applications list from task manager for just a second.

i still experience the same problems when running from safe mode (unable to run any anti-virus/spyware/malware). in fact, one time i was in safe mode and i was STILL getting the "your pc is infected, blah blah blah messages) in the sys tray. pc police pro, all kinds of crap. it only was on there once, but still not a good sign.

This is very annoying, and really would prefer reformatting as a last resort. I'd really appreciate any advice or help anyone can offer, and am willing to try anything. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

When you bump your topic, it appears as though you are already receiving help; as such, you are overlooked because of it.

Download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post the one that is not minimized.
