win32/Detrahere!reg

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've run into a Trojan that I am having difficulty removing. The issue arose after allowing my son to use my computer (first mistake). He disable protection and downloaded a program file and installed it. To nobodies surprise (except my son) the program was infected with some pretty nasty stuff. I will spare you all the bloody details and cut to the chase.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64. I use Malwarebytes (MWB) daily on startup and have Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) for real time protection (I know, I know - but I don't do anything high risk online except let my son use my computer). My first action was to see what programs had been installed and to uninstall them - there were 7 programs and they all seemed to uninstall without issue. However, I could tell that something wasn't quite right. So, I tried to fire up MWB to run a scan and it wouldn't load. The infection initially disabled both MWB and MSE. After re-installing MWB the scan revealed 135 items - a couple trojans, a bunch of adwares, and several PUPs - and successfully removed them but required a restart. On restart MWB was again disabled. After re-installing MWB the scan revealed 15 items - a couple trojans and several adwares - successfully removed them and again required a restart. After this restart MWB was functioning (good sign) and the scan was clean. Whew!! Disaster averted (or so I thought).

I quickly noticed that things still are not right. I tried to open Chrome and it wouldn't open. So, I re-installed it. When it opens the first website I visit when I click the login link a new tab opens to a timeshare website. I check extensions and nothing...so I figure I am still infected. I run another scan with MWB and it is clean. So, I open MSE and run a quick scan and it finds win32/Detrahere!reg - it spins circles trying to delete it for about 15min and then the computer restarts. I run the scan again and it finds the same infection...rinse and repeat 4 times and it still finds but is unable to remove win32/Detrahere!reg. Using another computer I search online and can't find anything about win32/Detrahere!reg.

After speaking with a friend that is quite good with computers I decide to download HitMan Pro (HMP). I first run a scan with MWB and it is clean, then I run a scan with HMP and it finds 3 exe files that are infected with a virus, 1 trojan (not the same one) and a ton of cookies. HMP successfully deletes all and requires a restart. I re-scan with HMP and it is clean. I run a quick scan with MSE and it still finds the same trojan win32/Detrahere!reg. I open chrome and I get the same bad behaviors - I click on a menu item on one website and it opens a new tab and takes me to a facebook page for some business that I don't recognize.

So, I am still infected with win32/Detrahere!reg and MWB and HMP both say that my system is clean but MSE says I have this trojan but can't remove it.

Any suggestions on how to kill this one would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pat

Hi,

The download link for Zemana didn't work (it downloaded an empty file). So, I went to the zemana.com website and downloaded their free version, which had the same filename, installed it and ran a scan. 6 seconds into the scan the program threw an error (see attached screenshot) and the program closed. I tried to re-open the program and run the scan again with the same result. I will try restarting the computer and see if that clears the error. If not, then I will move on to the next recommended program. Either way I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks,

Pat

stuff!! I uploaded the empty zemana installation file to totalvirus.com and it was clean but I didn't upload the actual installation file to check it before installing. The free version zemana installation file that I downloaded included Yandex Trojan.Agent!It3TB3rQYCI

I hate it when that happens. I will continue to your further instructions and let you know the outcome.

Hello again Pat,

Your logs indicate smartservie infection, to remove that infection you will need access to a spare PC and a USB Flashdrive 4gb or above.

Do this first on the infected PC:

Open and elevted command prompt: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-run-command-prompt-as-an-administrator

At the prompt either type or copy/paste the following commands, select enter after each command:

bcdedit.exe /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes
bcdedit.exe /set {default} recoveryenabled yes
exit

Next,

Plug USB Flash Drive into spare PC, navigate to that drive and Right click on it directly, select > Format. The quick option is adequate.

When the format completes download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

save it to a USB flash drive. Ensure to get the correct version for your system, 32 bit or 64 bit.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Do NOT plug the Flash drive into the sick PC untill booted to the Recovery Environment. <<-- Very important

If you are using Vista or Windows 7 enter System Recovery Options as follows.

Enter System Recovery Options I give two methods, use whichever is convenient for you.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you may get the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type E:\frst64 or E:\frst depending on your version. Press Enter Note: Replace letter E with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Next,

Boot back to Normal Windows, now run Malwarebytes as follows:

Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • On the Settings tab > Protection Scroll to and make sure the following are selected:
    Scan for Rootkits
    Scan within Archives

  • Scroll further to Potential Threat Protection make sure the following are set as follows:
Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP`s) set as :- Always detect PUP`s (recommended)
Potentially Unwanted Modifications (PUM`s) set as :- Alwaysdetect PUM`s (recommended)

  • Click on the Scan make sure Threat Scan is selected,
  • A Threat Scan will begin.
  • When the scan is complete if anything is found make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (that will automatically check all detected items), then click on the Quarantine Selected Tab
  • If asked to restart your computer to complete the removal, please do so
  • When complete click on Export Summary after deletion (bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard.
  • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more to retrieve the log.

To get the log from Malwarebytes do the following:

  • Click on the Reports tab > from main interface.
  • Double click on the Scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click Export > From export you have two options:
Copy to Clipboard - if seleted right click to your reply and select "Paste" log will be pasted to your reply
Text file (*.txt) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply

  • Use "Copy to Clipboard, then Right click to your reply > select "Paste" that will copy the log to your reply…

Next,

Run FRST one more time, ensure all boxes are checkmarked under "Whitelist" but only Addition.txt under "Optional scan" Select scan, when done post the new logs. "FRST.txt" and "Addition.txt"

Let me see those logs in your reply..

Thank you,

Please find attached FRST1 from recovery mode scan and mwb-report, FRST and Addition from after as you described.

I tried to upload these files last night but the browser would not let me. Every time that I tried to submit I would be redirected to another tab with an advertisement. At the same time I got a warning from MSE to use Microsoft Defender Offline. So, I decided to follow the instructions from MSE and created a Defender Offline flashdrive. Defender Offline found 3 trojans: win64/Detrahere.S, win32/Bluteal.B!rfn, and win32/Tiggre!rfn, however in looking at the details all 3 had been previously quarantined by FRST. Defender Offline was able to delete them from the FRST Quarantine.

I'm still not certain that the machine is clean. I will await further instructions and let you know if I experience any further abnormal behavior.

Hi Kevin,

I just ran a scan with Hitman Pro and it was clean. Previously, every time I ran a scan with Hitman Pro it was finding dozens of tracking cookies from strange domains - now nothing.

I then ran a scan with MSE and once again it found the win32/Detrahere!reg but it was able to Quarantine and I was able to Remove All. Previously, it was unable to Quarantine or Remove the registry entry.

I think your command line FRST scan was the winner. I am cautiously optimistic at this point that you have helped to remove the threat.

Please let me know what you think and if any further actions are required.

Thanks,

Pat

Hiya Pat,

Your system is still very much infected, run the following FRST fix:

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into. "Do not open that file when running FRST fix"
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Open FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes onto your Desktop.

Or from this Mirror

  • Right-click on AdwCleaner.exe and select user posted imageRun as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Accept the EULA (I accept), then click on Scan
  • Let the scan complete. Once it's done, make sure that every item listed in the different tabs is checked and click on the Clean button. This will kill all the active processes
  • Once the cleaning process is complete, AdwCleaner will ask to restart your computer, do it
  • After the restart, a log will open when logging in. Please copy/paste the content of that log in your next reply

Next,

Download Microsoft's " Malicious Software Removal Tool" and save direct to the desktop

Ensure to get the correct version for your system....

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/malicious-software-removal-tool-details.aspx

Right click on the Tool, select “Run as Administrator” the tool will expand to the options Window
In the "Scan Type" window, select Quick Scan
Perform a scan and Click Finish when the scan is done.

Retrieve the MSRT log as follows, and post it in your next reply:

1) Select the Windows key and R key together to open the "Run" function
2) Type or Copy/Paste the following command to the "Run Line" and Press Enter:

notepad c:\windows\debug\mrt.log

The log will include log details for each time MSRT has run, we only need the most recent log by date and time....

Let me see those logs in your reply, also tell me if there are any remaining issues or concerns..

Thank you,

Kevin...

Hi Kevin,

Please find the requested reports attached. I ran the Microsoft Safety Scanner before running the Malicious Software Removal Tool as I thought they were the same. Safety Scanner also came back clean. Here is the log for Malicious Software Removal Tool:

Hey Kevin,

It appears good. I have been working from it for the last 5 hours and haven't noticed any strange behaviors, no unusual processes in task manager, and overall performance appears to be improved. I will continue to run a variety of scans daily for a few days to ensure they continue to be clean.

I appreciate all of your help - I'll send you a thank you donation later today.

Thanks,

Pat

Hiya Pat,

Good to hear your system is running as expected, we still need to clean up.. (I`ve also sent you a PM)

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

If your security program alerts to Delfix either, accept the alert or turn your security off.

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  • Remove disinfection tools <----- this will remove tools we may have used.
  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.
  • Reset system settings <--- this will reset any system settings back to default that were changed either by us during cleansing or malware/infection

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…
