Windows Media Player error C00D10D1: unidentified codec

So none of my video files play audio on WMV or VLC. When I try to play thru WMV and press back I see the name of the file and on the left of it I see the icon for the audio with a red circle and a white X over the icon. When I click on that I get an option for Error Details, when I click on that I get the following message. "An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the web, click Web Help." When I go to Web Help I get sent to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/codecfallbackand a page that says what the title of the topic says and doesn't offer any real solution. Any help I could get here?

Hello and welcome back:

Since you mention that you are/were infected, there may be malware remnants or damage from the malware.

We are not permitted to work on possible malware-related issues here in this section of the forum.
Such work is conducted in a special forum area reserved for that purpose, or at the help desk.

So, for expert assistance, I suggest that you please follow the advice in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.
It explains the options for free, expert help >>AND<< the suggested, preliminary steps to expedite the process.
A malware analyst will assist you with looking into your issue - the helper will guide you through scanning, cleanup and repair.

Thanks,
