Hello and post-32477-1261866970.gif

P2P/Piracy Warning:

I`ve included a fix in FRST fixlist to stop uTorrent loading at boot to comply with forum protocol.....

Next,

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.

NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, from the Dashboard please Check for Updates by clicking the Update Now... link

When the update completes select > Settings > Detection and Protection > Enable Scan for rootkit and Under Non Malware Protection set both PUP and PUM to Treat detections as malware.

Click on the SCAN button and run a Threat Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by clicking the Scan Now>> button.

When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Apply Actions to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.

In most cases, a restart will be required.

Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.

Once completed please click on the History > Application Logs and find your scan log and open it and then click on the "copy to clipboard" button and post back the results on your next reply.

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

Double click on Adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan
Once the scan is done, click on the Clean button.
You will get a prompt asking to close all programs. Click OK.
Click OK again to reboot your computer.
A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
You can also find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[sn].txt. Where n in the scan reference number

Next,

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts. (re-enable when done)
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Next,

Download Microsoft's " Malicious Software Removal Tool" and save direct to the desktop

Ensure to get the correct version for your system....

32 Bit version:

Thank you for all of the information!

I am not sure why UTorrent was a part my processes, as I had already deleted a while ago.

None the less, here are all five of my log results. Please let me know if I am missing anything.

Thank you again so much for your help, I look forward to see what you find.

Thanks for the logs, what is the current status of your system, are there any remaining issues or concerns.....

Next,

Download Security Check by screen317 from either of the following:

http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe or http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe

Save it to your Desktop. (If your security alerts either accept the alert, or turn the security off while Secuirity Check runs)
Double click SecurityCheck.exe (Vista or Windows 7/8 users right click and select "Run as Administrator") and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

If Security Check will not run or you get an alert saying it is not supported, Re-boot your PC then try again...

Thanks,

Last night after I ran through your previous steps, I had no more problems. CPU usage around 2%, only 1 dlllhost.exe running at low usage, malwarebytes is not blocking anything, malwarebytes and comodo scans not finding anything. However before I posted my issue, I had been in the "clear zone" for about an evening after my anti virus originally picked up the virus, and the next day the I was having the same problems.

I will post those logs as soon as I get home this evening. At what point do we know the computer is free of trouble?

Thank you again!

In that case, so far so good, working normally after the initial steps you had me do - perhaps the bug wasn't so bad?

Like I said though, I'll post the logs of Security Check this evening.

Do you think it's safe to continue using my computer like normal? By the way, when you are looking through your logs, is there specific information you look for as tip off that something is awry?

The infection you had was Poweliks, that is a nasty infection to pick up. When we are sure your system is clean it will be a good time to change any passwords used on your system, specifically any that have financial implications, eg. Online banking, Paypal, anything with credit card payments etc...

Post security checks log whenever you`re ready....

Thanks,

Kevin

Well I've run into an extremely frustrating issue. I tried booting into safe mode to run SecurityCheck, per the recommendation of a Trusted Advisor on a different thread. F8 would not boot into safe mode, and thinking it was just my keyboard, I changed my settings to boot into safe mode every time.

Now my computer loops in safe mode, constantly rebooting after a few seconds of freezing at the login screen. I have attempted to load my original Windows 7 disk, and do a system restore (my DVD player was first in Bios load order) but I receive the error message that my current version of Windows is not compatible with the disk. Another interesting note - my BIOS lists 4 possible boot ups: My DVD drive, my SSD, another DVD drive, and some drive with a bunch of random letters and numbers. I only have 3 drives, my SSD (my boot drive), DVD drive, and a regular disk drive.

So long story short I walked into a S*** hole with Powlikes and the periphery problems. I am attempting (and have done so several times now) to restore to an earlier point. I'll keep you posted. If I am indeed successful in restoring from an earlier point, should I do all the tests again?

Thank you,

T

SecurityChecks is a diagnostic tool, it makes no changes whatsoever to your system. Please only follow the instructions as I list them, do not listen to any third party advisor...

Let me know what your current status is, if you have used system restore successfully run the two following scanners....

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system (32 bit or 64 bit). If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Next,

Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop from the following link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/

Quit all running programs.
For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista,Windows 7/8, Right-click on the program and select Run as Administrator to start and when prompted allow it to run.
Read and accept the EULA (End User Licene Agreement)
Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes select "Report", log will open. Close the program > Don't Fix anything!
Post back the report which should also be located here:

C:\Programdata\RogueKiller\Logs <-------- W7/8

Let me see those logs....

Thank you,

Kevin...

I finally managed to work around the safeboot restart loop by doing a system restore and then turning off safeboot in the system recovery command prompt.

Of course, b/c I did a restore, the virus activity was back. I ran through every step again from start to finish. I have posted all the logs, including Rogue Killer.

I have not quarantined anything, and so my CPU usage is still really high.

Please advice, thank you for your patience.

Run the following tool exactly as listed:

Download Security Check by screen317 from either of the following:

http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe or http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe

Save it to your Desktop. (If your security alerts either accept the alert, or turn the security off while Secuirity Check runs)

Multiple entries for svchost.exe is not unusual. Svchost is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries, an excerpt from an MS explanation follows:

Some time ago, Microsoft started moving all of the functionality from internal Windows services into .dll files instead of .exe files. From a programming perspective this makes more sense for reusability… but the problem is that you can’t launch a .dll file directly from Windows, it has to be loaded up from a running executable (.exe). Thus the svchost.exe process was born.

You may only have two windows open but there are many services that run at boot and remain so, hence all of the entries for svchost that you mention...

Next,

Regarding not booting to Safemode, yes that maybe down to Poweliks. run the following, let me know if that makes any difference...

Download Services Repair tool, available here - http://kb.eset.com/library/ESET/KB%20Team%20Only/Malware/ServicesRepair.exe and Save it to your Desktop. Right click on it and select Run As Administrator, follow the prompts. It should reboot when it finishes. If not reboot it yourself.

Hey Kevin

I apologize about the late response. I tried doing the Services Repair tool to no avail. I will do more research and see if I can figure out what's causing the problem..

Otherwise, my computer seems to have no problems. Are there any other checks we should run to verify that I am virus free, or should I begin changing passwords and the like?

Thank you so much!

Thanks for the update, ok we do another scan to check for malware/infection. When this is done depending what is found we can run a windows repair tool to help fix services that may have been trashed with Poweliks...

We still need to run an online AV scan to ensure there are no remnants of any infection left on your system that may have been missed. This scan is very thorough and well worth running, it can take several hours please be patient and let it complete:

Run Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and Windows 7/8 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin.

(To run ESET Online Scanner in a browser other than Internet Explorer, you'll need to download ESET SMART  Installer during the process)

Go to Eset web page http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ to run an online scan from ESET.

Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
click on the Run ESET Online Scanner button
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the add/on to be installed
Click Start
Make sure that the option "Remove found threats"  is UNticked
Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the following options are checked:

Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

Click Scan
wait for the virus definitions to be downloaded
Wait for the scan to finish

When the scan is complete

If no threats were found
put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
close program
report to me that nothing was found

If threats were found

click on "list of threats found"
click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop
Click on back
put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
click on finish

close program

Copy and paste the report in next reply.

Thanks,

Kevin..
