AV blocking address constantly

Recommended Posts

Last night I started getting notifications from my AV software (ESET NOD32) that an "Address has been blocked."  It seems to be two addresses.  Since ESET is blocking them, in theory, I'm hoping I'm not infected.  However, I suspect that I am, otherwise I wouldn't be getting these messages repeatedly.  I ran a "Smart Scan" with NOD32, but it didn't find anything.

Following the "I'm infected - What do I do now?" instructions, I ran Malwarebytes.  It found a handful of things that were either false positives (game installers) or suspicious items in an old backup from my wife's PC.

I then ran the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool, and I'm attaching the log files.  I'm also attaching an example of the warning from ESET.  Every one looks just like this, though I noticed a couple of minor differences.  As I said, they seem to be only two addresses.  However, the details vary a bit.  The stuff immediately before "=Mozilla/5.0" is different, and looks like malware website stuff.  It's stuff like "car+insurance+quotes+online", or "how+to+relieve+knee+pain" or things like that.

Thanks in advance.

Ok.  As stated above, I've removed uTorrent.  I do have some P2P software on the computer though.  Some of the games I have on my computer (World of Tanks, Lord of the Rings Online, and Star Citizen for sure) use P2P for downloading updates.  Can't get rid of that.  I'm hoping those won't compromise the fix.

I don't have pirated software on my system.  I don't do that.

Attached is the Malwarebytes log, and the RogueKiller Log.

I also created a new restore point and ensures system restore is turned on.

Thanks for helping me.  BTW, I will be out of town tomorrow and most of the next day.  I won't be able to get back to you during that period.

Then...........

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/dl/12/ <---ComboFix direct download

Please make sure you click download buttons that look similar to this, not "sponsored ad links":

bleep-crop.jpg

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

Last:

Clean out temp files:

Download TFC from here and save it to your desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/dl/92/
Close any open programs and Internet browsers.
Double click TFC.exe to run it on XP (for Vista and Windows 7 right click and choose "Run as administrator") and once it opens click on the Start button on the lower left of the program to allow it to begin cleaning.
Please be patient as clearing out temp files may take a while.
Once it completes you may be prompted to restart your computer, please do so.
Once it's finished you may delete TFC.exe from your desktop or save it for later use for the cleaning of temporary files.

I got to the part where I installed TDSSKiller and checked Loaded modules.  It rebooted.  When it reboot, I have a black screen with a cmd window that is blank, and a pop-up saying:

Open file - Security Warning

Do you want to run this file?

Name:  ..{F89282D0-8C2B-F33f-A399-65C66115DD7F}.exe

Publisher:  Kaspersky Lab

Type:  Application

From:  d:\user\Yippee38\ApData\Local\Temp\\{F892B2...

I assume that is just the TDSSKiller starting up, but want to make sure.

Should I click Run or Cancel?

Ok.  I ran into another problem.

I got to the ComboFix part.  I disconnected from the internet, then shut down firewall software.  I have ESET NOD32, so I used to icon on the taskbar and selected "Disable real-time file system protection" as indicated in the link.  When I ran ComboFix, I got the following:

ERU for Windows NT

Unable to create file:
C:/Windows/erdnt/Giv-backup/ERDNT.INF

Registry backup will continue, but no restore information for the ERDNT program will be saved.  This means that later restoration of the registry can only be done manually, by using another OS to copy back the files.

I clicked OK.  Then I got a bunch of (maybe 7-10 of them) errors like this:

Warning!

Error saving file
C:\Windows\erdnt\Hiv-backup\BCD !

Continue with next file?

I clicked YES.

I then got a message from ComboFix saying:

Warning!

ComboFix has detected the follwing real tie scanner(s) to be active:

antivirus:  ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7.0

antispyware:  ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7.0

Antivirus and intrusion prevention programs are known to interfere with ComboFix's running.  This may lead to unpredictable results or possible machine damage.

Please disable these scanners before clicking 'OK'.

I made sure they were disabled (I had already done so, but double-checked) and clicked OK.  I then got this warning:

Warning!

antivirus:  ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7.0

antispyware:  ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7.0

The above real time scanner(s) are still active but ComboFix shall continue to run.  Kindly note this is at your own risk.

I clicked OK.  I then got:

C:\ComboFix\CF27380.3XE

Windows cannot find 'C:\ComboFix\CF27380.3XE'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

And that was it.  What now?

No, just run this small scan:

Download and run this tool to verify it's gone:

...and if there's no other problems:

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • If you get Unsupported operating system. Aborting now, just reboot and try again.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • If you can't post it, attach it

Out dated programs on the system are vulnerable to malware.
Please update or uninstall them:

=====================================

Please uninstall this and any other Java listed in your Programs and Features:
Java 7 Update 71

Java version out of Date! <-------Download and install the latest version (Java™ 8 Update 25) from Here. Uncheck the box to install the Ask toolbar!!!, McAfee Security Scan Plus or any other free "stuff".

=====================================

A little clean up to do....

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (------->if you used it<-------)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter. (it may look like CF is re-installing but it's not)
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall or download and run the uninstaller)

---------------------------------

bwebb7v.jpgDownload Delfix from here and save it to your desktop. (you may already have this)

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Click the Run button.
  • Reboot

Any other programs or logs that are still remaining, you can manually delete. (right click.....Delete)
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST folder, FRST-OlderVersion folder, MBAR folder, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

Note:
If you used FRST and can't delete the quarantine folder:
Download the fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe.
Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and wait
That will delete the quarantine folder created by FRST.
The rest you can manually delete.

MrCharlie,

That behavior is back (the pop-up from my AV saying "Address has been blocked."

I know exactly when it started to happen again.  I used Internet Explorer-64 (which I almost never use) to open the Photobucket web site.  As soon as I did that, I got the message.  If that website was where it came from, that could be where I was infected originally.got it.  When I first used that page was about when I first started seeing that message.

Also, I've noticed that since I started getting that message (the first time), my sound card control panel will not minimize.  When I click on minimize, or close (the little X in the corner), it closes, then comes right back.  I don't know if this is related, or what, but it started happening at about the same time.
