PuP Trojan

Recommended Posts

Hi, I need help. I was notified by my virus program (MacAfee) that I had the PuP Trojan on my computer. I scanned with Malware Bytes Pro and it found it and deleted it. I rescanned and the log was clear. MacAfee also did an automatic scan and it was clear. Please check the two files to see If I need further assistance. Thanks for your help, Don

Hello DonL100

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Gringo

Hello DonL100

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo. I have Win7 and after the last run of the programs you suggested the McAfee icon in the task bar is gone along with a few other icons. Also when I go into programs and open the Security Center and check for ADVANCED it is not there. I went to toe McAfee webpage and list DISABLE MACAFEE it shows everything but how to disable McAfee. My McAfee Versions are VirusScan ver15.6. Security Center ver 11.6. What a mess!! Don

OK Gringo, I got that F%$K MacAfee turned off and here's the log from ComboFix. Also, the NOTE 2 Error came on so I rebooted and Internet Explorer comes on but won't allow me to connect any favorites (including this forum). I can turn Internet Explorer on and off but that's it  so I am using Fire Fox

Thanks Gringo, I did what you asked and finally IE started to work correctly.....until I rebooted. Then  IE went hay wire again. It starts but then freezes and I have to go into "Task Manger" to shut it down and then it takes 4 times for it to respond. I think the trojan or some parts of it are still on my computer. Malware Bytes Pro is clean. Please, What should I run next? Thanks, Don

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

Gringo, here are the reports you asked for. There were two RoagueKiller reports both marked (0) so I included both. One is a slightly larger file. The TDSSKILLER file was small enough to load. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks for your help and patience....Don

Hello DonL100

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

2.Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.

3.Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe

4.Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.

5.Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.

6.Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.

7.Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.

8.If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:

  • •Internet access

    •Windows Update

    •Windows Firewall

9.If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.

10.Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

Please download aswMBR to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • it will ask to download extra definitions - ALLOW IT
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.
When you are complete please send me both reports

Hi Gringo! Did as you asked. Ran Root-Kit twice and found nothing on both tries.Tried WinIE and it didn't work properly. It was doing the same thing as before (freezing, hard to close). I ran "fix damage" three times and rebooted each time and tried WinIE. Still the same problem. Downloaded MBR and when trying to run the program, I get the error message, "can not run, not a Win32 application". I tried downloading this app three times and running it and get the same error message. Now what? This thing is a real killer......Thanks, Don

Well Gringo, things must be getting better. I can copy/paste this log which neither Fire Fox or Win IE 10 would let me do before. And I can get into "safe mode" which I couldn't since I got the virus. However WinIE still freezes but I don't care as long as the virus/trojan is gone with the keyloggers that came with it. Google Chrome works great and it's better then IE anyway. Am I clean or do we have to continue?? The Combofix  log is included below. Thanks, Don

Hello

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)

  • Programs to remove
    • Adobe Reader X (10.1.7)

      Coupon Printer for Windows

      Java 7 Update 21

      Java 6 Update 20 (64-bit)

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free

Update Adobe reader

  • Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.

If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

    • If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Install Java:

    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.

  • Double-click mbam icon

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.

Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.

If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hello DonL100

try reseting IE once more like we did before - also looking thru the thread it seems you also have trouble with firefox

I want you to reset firefox back to defaults, this will remove everything from Firefox

I will let you keep your bookmarks so to do that you can go here - Export BookMarks

Now to reset firefox do the following.

  • At the top of the Firefox window, click the "Firefox" button,
  • go over to the "Help" sub-menu
    • (on Windows XP, click the Help menu at the top of the Firefox window) and select "Troubleshooting Information".
  • Click the "Reset Firefox" button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
  • click "Reset Firefox" in the confirmation window that opens.
  • Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done. Click "Finish" and Firefox will open.
restart the computer and check firefox for me now

Gringo, I'm on another computer (Inspiron Mini). When I reset IE and Firefox (IE didn't work, Firefox was fine) I rebooted my computer and two windows came up so I didn't want continue. Both windows were labeled "Windows firewall has blocked some of the features of this program". One of the windows was for "NetgearGenie.exe. The other was for "Logitech Vid HD which is an exe file{vid.exe}. In each, the box "allow public networks to communicate with these networks" was checked. The NetgearGenie window could be changed to the box allowing "private networks to connect" and to disconnect "public networks".  The Logiteck window could  only connect to "public networks" but not "private networks. I hope that this is clear.  Should I all ow the "private networks to connect and allow or just cancell both windows???? It looks to me like something is trying to get into my computer???....Don

FireFox works fine. When I log on to IE a webpage tries to open: http://g.msn.com/USCON/1. It won't open but keeps trying so I go into Control Panel-> internet options and change my default homepage( www.google.com/news).

When it opens and I try to open a favorites site, IE freezes and I have to go into Task Manager a couple of times to close it.  Don

Hello DonL100

I would like you to go to this page - Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode

Step 1 is going to show you how to run IE without any add/ons, If by running IE this way the problem goes away Then we can go to step 2

Step 2 will show you how to find the add/on that is causing the problem and then how to remove it

Hey Gringo, I did the IE Programs Add-ons and found that Adobe Systems Inc.- Adobe Shockwave Object (what ever that is?) was the problem program. I went through Siber Systems Robo Form (which I thought would be the problem),Hewlet Packard systems, (2) Java Systems and Google Tool Bar. What was left, I don't need. Everything was OK except Shockwave Opject. I'm using IE at this moment and it is fast and smooth.........so far. Are we "cleared for takeoff"????. No keyloggers etc.? Thanks Don
