Difficulty with virus removal

Recommended Posts

I am having serious difficulty getting rid of Helper.dll and all of its friends. Very annoying. Yesterday my computer took a serious hit and picked up a couple of new infections. I wasn't able to run Malwarebytes and ultimately had to restart in safe mode - delete a couple of files - and then renamed malwarebytes. It found the following:

Hi,

I have some bad news that one of the trojans lifted by MBAM is purpose built password stealer.

Since we have no idea how long it has been active or what data it has harvested it is advisable once the all clear is sounded to change all passwords/logins that you have used on this PC both on the machine and your online activities!

I need a couple more logs just to dig a bit deeper to check if all is well!

STEP 01

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:
You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.
Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe' rel="external nofollow">

Note:
The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

Thanks for the info. I will go ahead and change passwords when we are finished. I'm very annoyed with PCCillin. I know that some viruses are going to occasionally slip through but my system seems to have picked up a whole boat load of trouble...

Ok thats looking a lot better now :(

One thing that does stick out in your logs is that you still have older and known vulnerable versions of Java installed.

You will need to uninstall all versions except Vers.6 Update 12 via add/remove control panel.

If you do not have the latest version it can be downloaded from here>>

Thank you very much. Does that mean I should delete both Java programs I have listed in my control panel.

1. JS2E Runtime environment 5.0 Update 9

2. Java 2 Runtime environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Thanks again for your help.

So, I have officially updated everything and removed the older versions of programs. However, since the repair/removal I have been having significant problems with Internet explorer. It won't open certain pages and I keep getting script errors. I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this but any help for these types of issues?

Hi UNCBMC,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but i have been busy over the weekend.

Please open Hijackthis and then place a check(Tick) next to the following line.

O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 browser-security.microsoft.com

Then select *Fix checked*

Next via right click on Internet Explorer icon on desktop or via Internet explorer window & tools options

select *internet options* then locate advanced settings tab.

Look for restore to defaults options and then select *apply*

Let me know if that sorts out the browser issue's :D

No worries...I appreciate any help, no matter the delay.

Actually, the operation

O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 browser-security.microsoft.com

does not currently exist in my current HJT log. I see it on the first HJT log, but not the second.

Alright...so I'm having trouble again. My Internet explorer is occasionally, but not all the time - getting redirected. I'm unable to update Malwarebytes as it immediately crashes when I try. In addition, Mozilla and Chrome crash with just minimal use. I recently switched my Antivirus software to Kaspersky...not sure if this has had an effect.

Hi,

I have'nt had any dealings with KIS but i dont think that such a mainstream software would cause those kinds of issues.

So with that can you please do the following to see if we can address the issue's at hand.

1)Please download and run the MSRT>>>

http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Post back details on anything that it detects and removes.

2)Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/GooredFix.exe

Select "2. Fix Goored" by typing 2 and pressing Enter.

Make sure all instances of Firefox are closed at this point.

Type y at the prompt and press Enter again.

A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).

Note: If you receive a message saying that GooredFix needs your system to be restarted, please close all applications and reboot your system. Please also allow any registry changes that may be prompted by any of your security programs.
