Computer Woes

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, I tried several fixes before finding this site. Now, my computer still doesn't perform and I have gone through some of steps recommended. I can't recall exactly what I did, but I believe the sequence was something like: ran Housecall (microtrend online and required several tries to run) No threats found and still only partially operating computer. Then I attempted to restore to a date that was what believed prior to anything occurring. Somehow, I found eset and ran their online program which found some threats and I removed them. The computer was still not responding (when I would open programs, the computer wouldn't open anything) even selecting through the start menu, the programs would not run. At first, the file explorer program only worked and then none at all. Only way to shut down the computer was through holding the computer power button for several moments. Still searching, then, found bits and pieces of recommendations and tried the OTL log attached.

Finally, I found this forum and started going through the steps. Attached are the logs from Malwarebytes (last time run) mbam-log-2013-03-17 (21-13-48).txt; Defogger didn't seem to perform exactly as identified and stalled several times before it actually ran through but never got the message to reboot. I had to anyway since the machine froze at that time. Then ran the DDS and that too required several attempts until it run dds.txt attach.txt; And then GMER opened then didn't run, then finally was able to complete its run ark.txt.

Those were the last several steps...

P

What should I try next?

    62117367.jpg
    Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.

Ran the K... scan and only have 2 log files... but I do note that after running the scan the first time, the computer rebooted and asked if I wanted to run K... I hit cancel the second time so that I could respond here. All files found were left as skip and there was one that was listed for cure. Logs are here.TDSSKiller.2.8.16.0_20.03.2013_17.39.38_log.txtTDSSKiller.2.8.16.0_20.03.2013_17.37.18_log.txt

Also note, there is a folder now shown as TDSSKiller_Quarantine and there are a couple of folders with all numbers in the root directory that I didn't notice before.

Ran TDSSKiller again and deleted as instructed - logs are posted here. There quite a few items listed as threats, and they were all skipped...

TDSSKiller.2.8.16.0_21.03.2013_09.08.47_log.txt

TDSSKiller.2.8.16.0_21.03.2013_09.14.47_log.txt

My computer seems to be operating much more like normal. However, I don't seem to have any sounds?

The sound issue we'll deal with later.

The files you skipped are UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic and are not a threat.

-----------------------------------

Next......

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

I downloaded the combofix program and since I don't have any antivirus or malware programs that run automatically, I double clicked to start the program. I got a warning that states "Combofix has detected the following real time scanner(s) to be active: antivirus McAfee viruscan..." I have attempted to follow all of the information to close any of these programs, but none are indicated in my system tray and the only programs of this nature were ones that were either mentioned above or instructed to download. Should I click "ok" anyway? I also don't see a listing in task manager to stop an application?

ComboFix ran and the log is attached...ComboFix Log File.txt it didn't take nearly as long as it said it could and it was not interrupted. E

Ooops - I renamed the file that was open when the program ended... then reread your directions after I posted and found the original txt file in the root directory. Sorry, but here is the file from the root directory just in case it makes a difference.ComboFix.txt

How is it running now???

-------------------------

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.

AdwCleaner is a reliable removal tool for Adware, Foistware, toolbars and potentially unwanted programs.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :

· Adwares (software ads)

· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)

· Toolbars

· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

It works with a Search and Deletion methode. It can be easily uninstalled using the "Uninstall" mode.

  1. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
  2. Now click on the Search tab.
  3. Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.

Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.

Note:

Please look over what was found......especially any folders, we're going to permanently delete it all in the next step....if there's something you may want to keep...please let me know and I'll explain to why it shouldn't be on your system.

If you see AVG Secure Search being targeted for deletion, Here's Why and Here. You can always Reinstall it.

OK, it's all adware.....

Please create a new system restore point before continuing.

Lots of adware found....lets clear it out.....

  1. Please re-run AdwCleaner
  2. Click on Delete button.
  3. Confirm each time with OK if asked.
  4. Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.

Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Then......

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • Do Not Attach It!!!

Java 7 Update 10 <---please update should be Update 17

Java version out of Date! <--------Go to control panel > Java > Update Tab > Update Now

Uncheck the box to install the Ask toolbar!!! and any other free "stuff".

If there's no update tab in Java, uninstall it and Download and install the latest version from Here

Uncheck the box to install the Ask toolbar!!! and any other free "stuff".

Adobe Reader 10.1.6 Adobe Reader out of Date! <---please check for an update if available or uninstall and download and install Foxit Reader which is less vulnerable to malware and much better than Adobe.

Google Chrome 23.0.1271.97 <---Old

Google Chrome 25.0.1364.172 <----OK

You have old versions of Google Chrome on the system.

Please download and run OldChromeRemover.

@Windows Vista/Windows 7 users must use “Run As Administrator.”

=====================

You have out dated programs on the system which are vulnerable to malware.

Please update or uninstall them

Info on doing that can be found in my Preventive Maintenance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little clean up to do....
Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)
Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"
Copy and paste next command in the field:
ComboFix /uninstall
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
cf2.jpg
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point
(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)
---------------------------------
Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com
http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)
Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.
MrC - I thought we were done, but I'm still having trouble with my audio... I went through the steps and took suggestions from the preventative maintenance. There were some Microsoft updates that were updated. My computer is working great. However, the audio still doesn't seem to work. I went through the troubleshooting with windows and selected roll back the driver version which was original I think and I could play the standard windows sounds again. After the computer rebooted, I can no longer play the standard sounds and I can't get anything when playing Itunes. Do you have any recommendations?
MrC - thank you yet again! The fix it tool worked... according to the report, something was muted but when I was in the settings, everything looked in the correct check box. In any event, music to my ears! And no more issues... Thank you!
