Protection Module Errors

I recently registered and enabled protection, and now every time I boot up I get the message "The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Protection Module is already running!" with an OK button. I tried the uninstall/mbab-clean/install procedure and that didn't help. How do I fix this problem? Also, as I write this a few minutes after booting up, I get the message "[shell_NotifyIcon] Failed to perform desired action. Error Code: 0". Operating system is Windows XP Pro.
