  1. If you start Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) before you start your scan, you can confirm whether your problem and mine are the same. Mine also locks up at the 7 second point. If Task Manager tells you that WinMgmt.exe and CSRSS.EXE are getting all the CPU time, then we have the same problem. Dave S.
  2. I downloaded and installed MalWareBytes for the first time today, because of the recommendation of a tech support newsletter. So far it fails to work for me. My computer is running Windows 2000 SP4. The first time I ran MalwareBytes, after 12 seconds the system froze. I had Task Manager running, and it showed that WinMgmt.exe and CSRSS.EXE were using 100% of CPU. I think the name of the file being scanned was something like mscvrt.dll I rebooted, and this time exited my AVG Free before starting MalWareBytes. This time it also froze after 12 seconds, with the same 2 processes using 100% of CPU. The file being scanned this time was C:\WINNT\System32\ole32.dll If this helps, there are other programs that will cause those files to use all my CPU. Windows Update, if I allow it to update DirectX, or to install Malicious Software Removal Tool, with have that effect. Other windows updates do not. Dave S.
