No bootable CD in ATAPI CD ROM

Recommended Posts

Hey

Been using MB for some time, always found it reliable and useful..

I was performing a scan one someone else's laptop (Packard Bell, oldish!) & it found some viruses (one of the TDSS kind & also trojan.hiloti.s amongst others). Was asked to restart to complete the removal of the viruses, but then got the "No bootable cd in atapi cd rom" message when it restarted!

Incase anyone asks.. no, there isn't a CD in the drive when I boot up :) I've gone back into the BIOS & change the primart boot device back to HDD, but I just get the black screen with a cursor.

Thus, I cannot enter into Windows XP :( I have tried a few things, but they haven't worked, I'm assuming I did them correctly! I have tried the following as I have the Windows XP CD (courtesy of my Dell desktop)

1) Windows Install - previous successful installation, followed by Chkdsk

2) Windows Install - Repair - R

3) Created & tried using a bootable linux USB, but get a "Boot Error" message (I assume this is due to laptop BIOS not being able to perform this, as the Bootable USB works fine on the desktop)

4) I tried the following command in Windows Recovery Console: EXPAND -R d:\I386\atapi.sy_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys but got Invalid Parameter message, have I typed something wrong, and is it even relevant? (saw it another part of this forum)

Just can't seem to sort this out, and it's a bit frustrating as you can imagine. I'm assuming the only other options are to create a bootable CD, and attempt it with this. I did burn and try Hiren's Bootable CD, but neither laptop nor desktop recognised it for some reason! So might try this again with another Bootable CD?

I'm wondering if MB deleted ATAPI.sys related values? All this is leaving me a bit puzzled, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

:welcome:

The TDSS is a MBR RootKit.

It appears you are able to boot from an XP CD into the Recover Console.

Try using this command by typing in:

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0

If you're at the C:\ just try fixmbr

Type Exit and reboot

Hi, thanks for your prompt response!!

Yep, a wonderful rootkit. Hopefully doing your suggested command will resolve the issue. I will be trying it shortly, just wanted to make sure that none of the personal files/programs will be affected by the fixmbr command?

Thanks again

I will be trying the above shortly, just wanted to check that none of personal files/programs will be affected by performing the fixmbr command?

Ok... counted my chickens before they hatched!

I get the Windows XP Home Edition logo (GREAT!).. then I get the light blue Windows Setup screen saying "Setup is being restarted............." after which I see a black screen with the mouse cursor and then the laptop reboots itself, and this cycle repeats itself!!

Any ideas?

It appears you are able to boot from an XP CD into the Recovery Console.

If you're at the C:\ just try fixboot

Type Exit and reboot

If that didn't work try chkdsk /r<---Note the space as it needs to be there

Fixboot didnt work and neither did chkdsk /r :(

Incidently, I seem to have a Option 1: E:\Minint and Option 2 C:\Windows in Recovery Console, but performed both of your suggestions on C:\Windows

I've had a search online, and not sure if it can be fixed as the repair installation of XP was interupted by myself (idiot). I panicked when I saw the Repair appearing/implying it was going to reinstall the operating system. I switched the laptop off and here I am. Apologies for not explaining earlier. It's key to maintain the data, installed programs & settings if possible!

Thank you for persisting with me. I've tried what you have suggested above but this doesn't seem to have made a difference, the problem still exists!

Do you think it's worth trying Section B on the following link http://www.myfixes.com/articles/system ?
