I think this is related to an issue being discussed in the MBAM general forum as well: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7420

The system will not allow me to run MBAM or Spybot, not even in Safe Mode. Norton Antibot caught and claims to have quarantined brastk.exe; Auto-Protect detects both beep.sys and Trojan.Perfcoo.

While I have disconnected the infected computer from the Internet, I've been able to run HJT and OTListIt via USB stick:

Logs are attached because the message is too long otherwise.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide - don't know if the answer is just to sit tight and wait, as this seems new.

Hi there. I will review your logs, In the meantime please do the following:

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER

  • Open the zip file and copy the file
    gmer.exe
    to your Desktop.

  • Double click on
    gmer.exe
    and run it.

  • It may take a minute to load and become available.

  • Do not make any changes. Click on the
    SCAN
    button and DO NOT use the computer while it's scanning.

  • Once the scan is done click on the
    SAVE
    button and browse to your Desktop and save the file as
    GMER.LOG

  • Zip up the
    GMER.LOG
    file and save it as
    gmerlog.zip
    and attach it to your reply post.

  • DO NOT
    directly post this log into a reply. You
    MUST
    attach it as a
    .ZIP
    file.

  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.

Please try renaming the MBAM installer to hellothere.exe install it in Safe Mode if needed and then see if you can run MBAM. Be sure to take action for all items found post that log. Please get HiJack This! install it to C:\Program Files

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running, and click on scan and save a log. Post that log as a reply here in the body of the post, not as an attatchement. You may have to rename HJT also, choose any name and be sure you keep the .exe extension in tact. Post that log also.

Hi Jean,

I've made progress but am not out of the woods yet. I was able to run MBAM in safe mode. That got rid of enough stuff so that I am now able to run MBAM in normal mode. When I ran it in normal mode, it found a bunch of TDSS stuff.

I ran it one more time, and it looks like the TDSS keeps coming back. Here is my most recent MBAM logfile. I should add that while MBAM was running, Auto-Protect caught some TDSS as well as av.dat.

I will run another MBAM overnight and let you know if it comes back.

Here are the results of my latest MBAM scan. You'll see I updated the MBAM Rules to 1378 (are there any newer ones available for download? I disconnected the infected computer from the INternet for safety reasons).

I'll try again when I get home from work this afternoon.

Yes there are much newer definitions, are you able to get the infected machine online? If so update MBAM that way, quckscan, post the log.

C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe move HJT to program files into it's own folder. I need that log with an MBAM log always and after you have ran MBAM.

Uninstall Java from Add/Remove programs You have an ancient version also uninstall Viewpoint and Adobe reader.

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

Your running an outdated and unsafe version of Adobe Acrobat Reader latest version. Or get the alternative faster lighter on resources Foxit PDF Reader and Editor Look at the Downloads tab here or Downloads if you don't want to see the features etc.

After installing. Update Windows also to SP3.

Your log looks clean. We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.

Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.

Many infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.

A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP and Vista is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I use and recommend Online Armor Free

Also the full protection of MBAM is offered at a very low price, from the link in my signature.

Update MBAM again, run a quick scan post that and a new HJT log too.
