Having trouble running Malwarebytes due to Antivirus alert

Hello.

I have been having trouble running Malware bytes or anything else from my laptop.

I have picked up a virus which pops up with a security warning saying : Application cannot be executed. The file mbam.exe. is infected. Do you want to to activate your antivirus now ?

This stops me from going onto the internet or from opening Malwarebytes. If I do manage to open M.B it stops the program from finishing.

A friend sugested running M.B from safe mode but I cant seem to find any programs after staring the computer this way. My laptop runs from Windows Vista.

My apologies if this problem has been covered before or its basic.
