Program 'Compability' Assistant Hijacker

Hello, I am very frustrated, as all who post on here may be. Every time I load any Adobe product that loads video codecs, I get a popup that says "Program Compability Assistant"

it reads----

This program requires a missing Windows codec

yes I spelled it correctly

when I click "Download missing codecs" it takes me to the site "http://totalcodec.com/"

I know this is all a farce. I can't load any of my video editing programs, MS Security Essentials finds random files now and then and deletes them, and Malwarebytes did find some issues but now comes up clean and the problem still exists. I downloaded the HiJackThis program but have no clue what I am doing. Please help.
