Random Pop Ups and Redirects

Recommended Posts

I'm getting Random Pop Ups and Redirects. Malwarebytes and AVG found a few things and got rid of them when this issue started. DDS is below and I have attached logs of Malwarebytes and Attach.txt. I could not get GMER to finish scanning. Each time I ran it, it would restart my PC. Thank you.

atlbrav158,

Is this a business PC? There are a number of reasons I ask:

  • If you are running Malwarebytes on a business system, it must be a licensed version which makes you eligible for priority support at corporate-support@malwarebytes.org
  • If your business has IT support, it would be wiser to utilize them as they are more familiar with your IT environment
  • Many companies have policies against employees doing this type of work on their PCs
  • Your business may have policies or software versions in place that are business critical and should not be altered or removed. Obviously, I would have no way to know what they are. The tools we use for home/personal systems will occasionally alter system settings.
  • Posting your logs in an open forum like this could possibly expose proprietary business informaton.

Let me know and we will decide how to proceed. You do have an active infection.

atlbrav158,

OK, thanks. Here are your first instructions:

icon11.gif Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1

Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

atlbrav158,

We need to rename a file, then use the Recovery Console to replace an infected driver:

1. Open Notepad

2. Copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

@echo off
copy /y C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\atapi.sys c:\
del %0

3. Save the file to your DESKTOP as "fix.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes.

4. Double click fix.bat. to run it. A small black box should open and close - this is normal.

Print out these instructions to use while in the Recovery Console:

1. Restart your computer.

2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.

3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.

5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, one at a time and press 'Enter' after each line. (refer to the quote box under the commands for the location of the spaces which are very important):

cd c:\windows\system32\drivers

ren atapi.sys atapi.vir

copy c:\atapi.sys

exit

cd<space>c:\windows\system32\drivers

ren<space>atapi.sys<space>atapi.vir

copy<space>c:\atapi.sys

You should see a message '1 file copied'. If you did not see that message, try again and ensure there is a space after the word copy and another space between the file paths.

If you do not see 1 file copied on the screen, even after ensuring the commands are correct, rename the file back to it's original name by typing the following command then hitting Enter.

ren atapi.vir atapi.sys

ren<space>atapi.old<space>atapi.sys

You should NOT be prompted to overwrite an existing file, but if you are, select No then type exit to restart and notify me of your results)

6. Type exit and press 'Enter'. Your computer should reboot.

Press Start > Run or Windows Key + R then copy and paste the following command into the run box that opens and press "Enter"

cmd /c mbr -t>"%userprofile%\Desktop\mbr.txt"

That will place a file called MBR.txt on your desktop. Please copy and paste the contents of that file into your next post.

Please include the following in your next post:

  • MBR log

atlbrav158,

Thanks for your patience. You have an infected driver that's doing a nice job of hiding from my tools. This should help me find it:

You must first verify that you can logon to the Windows Recovery Console.

To do so, you must have the Recovery Console installed or use the Windows XP installation cd.

How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console

Next, please download maxlook, saving the file to your desktop.

Double click maxlook.exe to run it. Note - you must run it only once!

As instructed when the tool runs, restart the computer and logon to the Recovery Console.

Execute the following bolded command at the x:\windows> prompt <--- the red x represents your operating system drive letter, usually C

batch look.bat

Press Enter

You will see 1 file copied many times then return to the x:\windows> prompt.

Type Exit to restart your computer then logon in normal mode.

Once back in Windows, go to Start > Run, and copy/paste the following then press Enter.

maxlook -sig

Follow the prompts, and post (or attach) the log produced, C:\looklog.txt

If that won't run for you please run Rootkit Unhooker again

Please include the following in your next post:

  • maxlook log
