Trojan.Downloader - Which Files to Remove?

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been working with this computer all night, and I happened to stumble upon this lovely site and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Scanner.

I performed a quick scan, and it came up with various files, registry values, and memory modules that seem to be infected by the same Trojan. I don't have much experience with this type of thing, but anything that changes the registry sets off alarm bells in my mind...so before I have it delete these files, I was hoping that someone could please double-check and let me know if that is indeed the best course of action here.

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do, like creating a restore point, etc.

Thank you so much for your time and expertise! :)

Here's the log from the quick scan:

Thank you for your prompt reply!

I went to the link you provided. First, I downloaded, updated, and scanned with Spybot Search & Destroy, following the instructions. I removed the items it found (18, I believe...mostly cookies).

Next, I ran another quick scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and it found the same items as before. I chose to remove all of the items, and the program prompted me to restart to remove 4 items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\hb241g.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\wnl32.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\wsil32.dll (folder and memory modules.) I saved and closed all open files, and then chose to restart.

So, now I'm off to run the Panda scan and later I'll work with HJT.

Please let me know if I'm not doing something correctly or if I should be taking more action at this time.

Thank you once again for your time and expertise! :)

Here is the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log for that scan (Please note that I saved the log before the removal process. Only the four items previously mentioned had to be removed on restart.):

I'd hate to double post, but I figured that it would be best to post the other two logs before I call it a night.

Wow, looking at this post, it doesn't seem like I'm posting the scan results correctly, but...this is the best I can do. I apologize in advance...

Thanks again for all your time, help, and patience! :)

Here are the results of the Panda Scan (please note that I had already done a panda scan a few days ago, and there is nothing new on there):

You did not take action with MBAM in the log you posted. You must choose to remove the bad items. I don't want edited logs, or reports of what you did. I need to see the scan with the items removed. Then the HJT log after that. Please update MBAM, run a quick scan and post the log, and a new HJT log.

I'm sorry for the confusion. When I did the first scan, I accidentally closed the new log when it opened, because I was closing another window at *just* the wrong time. And then I couldn't find it.

I just now found the old log from after I removed the items...but I still just ran a new scan, as you asked. If you'd like to see the old log, here it is:

Logs for MBAM are stored right in the UI. Just start the scanner and you will see the Logs tab, they are dated and stored there until you delete them.

Please set your system to show

all files; Click Start.

Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Click Yes to confirm.

Click OK.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe <====== I need you to scan that file here http://www.virustotal.com/

and please upload it to here===> http://uploads.malwarebytes.org/ and this one c:\windows\system32\uyxgnon.dll .

Now run a scan only with HJT again and put a check next to the following and click fix when done.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode: by tapping the F8 key as soon as you restart, then using the arrow keys go to the option Safe Mode. Don't be alarmed when your mouse is gone and your desktop is black. This is normal.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Update MBAM run a quick scan post that and a new HJT please. Let me know how your running.

I seem to be having trouble with some of this.

At VirusTotal, I was able to scan the second file you asked me to scan, but I couldn't find the first one...is that because it's an .exe file? I don't think I'm looking in the right place.

And after I scanned the second file, it shows me a report...do you want me to post the report here?

I also uploaded the second file to the malwarebytes link you provided.

Do you have any advice for finding the first file? When I go into C: and then WINDOWS and then system32, all I can find are .dll's and other folders...no .exe's.

Since I don't think you want me doing the rest of the steps until I have this first part done, I won't run HJT or anything until it's okay for me to do so.

Thank you again for all your time, help, and patience.

Yes I want to see the report from Virus Total. Do you have the system set to show all files and folders? Are you running as an admin?

Go ahead and follow the instructions. Update MBAM and run a new scan with it too please, post that log and a new HJT.

ATTENTION: VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

As for that other file...yes, I have it set to show all files and folders (based on the directions in your previous post) and I'm fairly certain that I have admin rights...I don't know why I wouldn't, since my account is the only account on this computer. And I've been able to add/change/delete programs on here, so...I think so. I changed some file viewing options, and I was able to find some .exe's in that system32 folder, but not the one you named earlier. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... I even did a search for it within the WINDOWS folder, to no avail...

In HJT, I ran another scan and fixed the 8 files you mentioned. That went fine.

Then, I tried finding the other files in Safe Mode. That didn't go so well. I got into safe mode fine, I right clicked the start button, and then clicked "Explore" (I assume that's called Windows Explorer...but I don't know these things.). I'm not sure where to find the files you mentioned...

HKCU, HKLM, Startup...I couldn't really find anything like that. Do you have any advice? I'm not going to try the killbox until you let me know it's okay to do so...because the files may be there, and I'm just not looking in the right place.

Do you still want me to run MBAM before I complete the above steps? If so, I will do so.

My new HJT file follows:

OK, the HJT scan needs to be after the MBAM or any other tool always. To find a file begin with the drive letter C for these, so go to start, my computer, Local disk C then follow the rest of the file path. c:\windows\system32\uyxgnon.dll so for this one, on C you see the Windows folder, open it, then you go to System32 and you will see a massive amount of files that all have the .dll extension. You look for the uyxgnon and bingo. Does that help?

OK, let's run a scan only with HJT and put a check next to these and then click fix.

Reboot normally.

Update MBAM and do a quick scan and post a new log and a new HJT.

Just looking at that, I think some of the items you had me delete before have come back...I hope I'm not doing anything wrong...

Yes, that does help me know that I am looking in the right place for the c:\windows\system32\uyxgnon.dll and C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe files. So that means that since I can find the c:\windows\system32\uyxgnon.dll file but not the C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe file, that the C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe file is hidden from my view?

What I still need help with, however, is another part of your instructions from an earlier post.

My problem is finding those 3 files you listed while in safe mode:

"R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe"

I'm just not sure where to look...since I don't think they're in C...or are they?

This is an aside, but I think it may be something you should know about my situation, because it may be helpful information...

With the symptoms my computer has been exhibiting, I never got the chance to run HJT while it was happening. As I was posting, I noticed that the symptoms were actually happening, so I took a chance and ran a new HJT scan, hoping that the change in state of my computer would allow you to see the evidence of what I'm seeing. Well, I did find something.

Here's the new HJT log:

Now, I don't understand 90% of the information written in that log. But, I was looking for a certain process, and I did find it. c:\program files\common files\mozilla shared\firefox.exe That is really important, for me, after the symptoms my computer has. Now, the vital thing to note here is that I never installed firefox. This computer only had IE on it when I bought it. Following the file path, I did find the folder with the process and everything else in it.

I guess my question is, seeing as how you use Firefox...is the firefox.exe process usually in that particular folder, within the "mozilla shared" folder? I wouldn't know, but that seems suspicious...and like I said, I'd almost expect that to be something I'd find, with what has been happening to my computer recently.

I hope all of that made sense...it's rather late here. If you'd like to hear the full story as to what has been happening with my computer since I first noticed the symptoms, just ask and I'll try to explain it as best I can in my next post. Anything to help figure out how to beat this!

Again, thank you so much for all your time, help, and patience. I truly appreciate it! :)

Oh dear bad instructions from me. The lines with numbers should not have been included to be found in Safe Mode to delete. Those should be removed with HJT.

Please find this C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe or the same C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.dll and C:\WINDOWS\system32\devldr32.exe right click choose from the drop down menu, send to zipped folder. Then attach that folder to your next post please.

Run HJT in scan only please and put a check next to these lines then click fix.

Review this article here how to use ComboFix

Be sure you cover the section on How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console and make sure it is installed on your machine. This is important should anything go wrong and we need to recover your PC and not lose all the data.

1. Download this file :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe save it to your desktop.

2. Double click combofix.exe. It will be a red icon with a white X on your desktop.

Follow the prompts you will get a blue cmd prompt screen and a choice to choose Y or N. Choose Y and hit enter.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. This logfile is located at C:\ComboFix.txt.

Post that log and a HiJack log in your next reply

Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

Oh dear bad instructions from me. The lines with numbers should not have been included to be found in Safe Mode to delete. Those should be removed with HJT.

No worries. I removed the one that was still there when I scanned with HJT, but the other one (O4 Startup something) was gone. I suppose that's good!

Please find this C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe or the same C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.dll

That's the file I haven't been able to find. I'm attaching a screencap of the windows folder (I hope that's okay), where I'm looking...where I think the cw9k9s4nfpzv.dll or .exe file should be, alphabetically, but there isn't one even starting with "cw" even... Maybe you'll notice something that I've been missing.

and C:\WINDOWS\system32\devldr32.exe right click choose from the drop down menu, send to zipped folder. Then attach that folder to your next post please.

Okay, I found that one. It will be attached to this message.

Run HJT in scan only please and put a check next to these lines then click fix.

Okay, that worked fine.

As for combofix, I'll review the article and post if I have any questions before following the steps.

Thanks again for all your time, help, and patience!! :(

Sorry, I've been working on an important project for work (since it's the middle of the month) and I haven't had a chance to read all of the instructions for combofix yet. Since it seems like such a powerful tool, I don't want to use it until I've read all the vital information.

I'll most likely have time to work on this tonight.

Thanks again. :)

Apparently that cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe file is still there... "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cw9k9s4nfpzv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe"

Any idea why I can't seem to find it in the system32 folder? Everything else you have me look for is right where I think it should be...it's odd.

Thanks again for your help. And I'll definitely wait before working with CF. :)

If I knew where it was or how it was hiding, we would not be here. Sorry, but it's a new variant, and we are doing the best we can to get it into the MBAM definitions so it can remove it. The people behind it are brilliant and it's a shame they can't put that to good rather than evil.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3787B284-825E-486C-900D-D57056AED3E5} - c:\windows\system32\uyxgnon.dll <==== I need a sample of the highlighted portion of that entry please. Zipped and attached here. Then delete it. I thought I had asked for it but I don't see it. Now run HJT in scan only put a check next to these files and click fix.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3787B284-825E-486C-900D-D57056AED3E5} - c:\windows\system32\uyxgnon.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cw9k9s4nfpzv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe

And then use File Assassin in MBAM to delete that file C:\WINDOWS\system32\cw9k9s4nfpzv.exe You will find it under the Tools tab. Reboot.

Update MBAM again it's at 962 now, might have the stuff we need. Run another scan and post that log and a new HJT log.

No worries. :( I just wondered if I was missing something blatantly obvious. That's usually why I don't find something - it's sitting right in front of me! :)

The people behind it are brilliant and it's a shame they can't put that to good rather than evil.

Well said! It is, indeed, a true shame.

When you asked for me to scan it at VirusTotal and upload it to: "http://uploads.malwarebytes.org", that's what I did. Sorry if I missed something. The file you asked for is attached now. Oh, in case it matters, when I find the uyxgnon.dll file, sitting right next to it is a uyxgnon.dll.bak file. I'm not sure if that's important or not. But I only attached the .dll file.

Okay...big problem.

I scanned with HJT and fixed the two lines you asked. Since one was a BHO or something, the program asked me to close all windows. So I did. When that finished, I opened a new notepad file, because that's what I use to type reminder lists and such...and I got a rather frightening error message:

Untitled - Notepad: notepad.exe - Unable to Locate Component

This application has failed to start because {lots of characters that aren't English}.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

What should I do now? I saved a screencap of the error message in case the nonsensical letters were important...

Yes please attach this one too uyxgnon.dll.bak .

Well...when I tried to put it into a zipped folder, it gave me an "Cannot create output file" error...so I'm not sure how to go about that now.

Lets see a new MBAM log and new HJT.

I'm running the MBAM scan now and will post when it finishes.

Those lines had nothing to do with Notepad. So that is something else. Post the screen shot so I can see what you see

I just tried opening notepad again...and it works!! I don't know what changed, but I certainly won't complain. The screencap is attached if you still want to see it. :(
