Suspected keylogger (for World of Warcraft)

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to fix this for about a week now, and to no avail. I'm going to describe the problem in case it will aid you. Last Tuesday (24 June) I logged into World of Warcraft (WoW) to play. Within about 5 minutes after logging in, I was dumped out of the program to the desktop; this is not a common occurence for me. I thought it was odd, but logged back in. A couple hours later I logged off for the night. The nexzt day, Wednesday 25 June, I checked my e-mail in the evening after a day out with my wife and son; I had an e-mail from Blizzard regarding my compromised account, and an e-mail notifying me of a personal message from the website for the guild I belong to. The message informed me my characters had been seen in-game that day; obviously I wasn't even in the house, and I've never shared my log-in information with anyone.

I have AVG Anti-Virus installed on my computer, and keep it up to date. I have Ad-Aware on my computer, and have since downloaded SpyBot Search and Destroy and your Anti-Malware software. I have run TREND MICRO's online scan; it found some malware and removed it last week. I was able to play for about 4 days with no problem (Friday, Sat, Sun and Mon), so I had hoped my problem was solved. Come Tuesday (July 1), the same problems returned. I am beyond frustrated in trying to find and eliminate this suspected keylogger. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

As per the instructions, here are the three logs:

Hi Sparkchaser87 and welcome to Malwarebytes. Keep this machine offline as much as possible. Your rooted and it's being controlled by someone else. Notify all banks, credit cards, any place where your identity is in danger, change those passwords, but do not log on from this machine.

Please set your system to show

all files; Click Start.

Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Click Yes to confirm.

Click OK.

I need you to find the files below for me.

Drag them into a folder you name Sparkchaser, zip the folder by right clicking it and choosing Send to zipped folder

. Now upload it to here http://uploads.malwarebytes.org/ please. If they are files larger than 2MB each then zip each one separately and name them with your name and number 1,2,3.

C:\ Windows\ System32\ 321102.exe

C:\ Windows\System32\ JAguAr.exe

C:\Windows\ System32\ init32.exe[

C:\WINDOWS\system32\google.exe

Open SB S&D

Make sure you are in Advanced Mode. Click on the Mode link at the top of the program and then Advanced Mode.

Click on the Tools section and then Resident.

You will see two items.

1. Resident "SD helper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker.) active

2. Resident "Tea Timer" (Protection of over-all system settings.) active.

Uncheck number 2..

Leave number 1 checked always.

You can enable Tea Timer again if you wish once all special fixes have been done.

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Preliminary] init32.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode:begin tapping the F8 key as soon as you reboot. Your screen will be all black and the mouse won't work. This is normal. Use the up/down keys to navigate to the option Safe Mode and hit the enter key.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://www.searchv.com/search.html

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0A37A66B-0DCD-F2EE-A257-3B8EDCE65FAD} - driver64.dll (file missing)

SOUNDMAN.EXE

ms-its.exe

Uint32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\google.exe

321102.exe

JAguAr.exe

init32.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterward.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

First, thank you very much for the quick response.

Secondly, I'm not quite sure what it means to be "rooted," but I'm going to guess it means my root directory is compromised.

Ok, I "un-hid" all of my files and folders, but was unable to locate any of the 4 files you specified. I did download Pocket Killbox and input the file names as directed. I have not been able to reboot my computer in Safe mode, though. I've hit F8 from the moment I hit the power button, and it never gave me the option. Here's the most recent HiJack This! log.

Hi again. I see your running two drives with program file folders? D:\Program Files\HiJackThis.exe And you have them on C also. We need to be scanning from the C folder with HJT. Please move it to there. Update MBAM run a quick scan, post that log and a new HJT. Thanks. Give me feed back on your system performance now too.

System performace was never really impacted, at least to any degree I noticed. I haven't logged back into WoW yet, since I'm waiting on a good prgnosis from Doc Montana. :)

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

ViewPoint is not a desirable item. It's considered foistware and forced on AOL customers. If your not using AOL for your ISP I recommend getting rid of it. It's just one more thing running using resources you don't need. Gamers need to keep this sort of crap to a minimum. :)

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe <==== Uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Now run HJT again in scan only mode. Check the following lines and click fix. These are just clean up. Looks like you do use or did use Comcast and there are missing components.

O9 - Extra button: Help - {1DF60FA1-19D2-11D6-8756-00A0D2170C61} - http://www.comcast.net/memberservices/ (file missing) (HKCU)

O9 - Extra button: Support - {1DF60FA2-19D2-11D6-8756-00A0D2170C61} - http://www.comcastsupport.com (file missing) (HKCU)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Reboot to normal mode and continue with these instructions.

Go to Windows Update and get Service Pack 3 installed and what ever else is needed.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

Your log looks clean. We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.

Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.

Many of these infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.

A firewall and anti virus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I use and recommend Online Armor Free

Also the full protection of MBAM is offered at a very low price. Give it a trial using the link in my signature

Okay, I uninstalled the previous version of Java, donwloaded and installed the most recent version of Java 6.

I uninstalled ViewManager. I was able to select the two Comcast lines in the HJT scan, but the ViewManager one was no longer there.

Downloaded SP 3 and got it updated.

As nearly as I can tell, I've created a new system restore point, but I was never prompted to name it.

I also downloaded Online Armor and installed it, even though I've used ZoneAlarm for a while. Is it pointless to keep both up and running? If so, I'll uninstall ZA.

Sometime this week I'll give the full version of MBAM a try; thanks again for your help. Once I get the checkbook balanced, I hope to be able to donate, as you've been a great help.

Now my system's running a little more sluggish than before. It hesitates a moment when browsing, and I had lag last night when playing WoW; it was usually about a second or two, but fairly consistent.

You can't run two firewalls at once. You have both ZA and OA stuff running. Also lots of other start up items not needed.

Well, I finally figured why I wasn't able to boot in Safe Mode before. My current keyboard has an "F" key lock key, so none of my F keys work during start up. I temp hooked up another keybaord, and voila'!

OK, sorry this slipped into another day. Been busy in RL work. You have a lot of stuff starting at boot you don't need. Also AdAware is a resource hog with a constant running service in this new version.

We have a program here called StartupLite that can stop many of these un-needed things from starting. It doesn't uninstall them, just stops them from starting safely. You can manually load the program. You might also benefit from a disk check for errors and a defrag. Do these in that order, error check then defrag.

Now moving on, Adobe needs updated version 8 is current.

Let's see a new log from MBAM, be sure to update quick scan and post a new HJT too.

No need to apologize; I'm grateful for your help. Posting on my wife's laptop while my computer is defragging. I work second shift (3pm to 11:30pm), so I generally check for new post notification before I go to work and then again after I get home.

Since Ad-Aware is such a resource hog, should I just uninstall it?

I think you can kill the service in AA and still use it as a on demand scanner. With MBAM, SBS&D and your AVG (also slow IMO) you are OK. After you run the defrag and Startup lite post a new HJT log and we'll see what else can get shut down.

Defrag done on both drives; updated MBAM and ran a Quick Scan. Downloaded Startup Lite and ran it. Here are the MBAM and HJT logs.

I suspect it may be Online Armor (OA). I turned OA off for about 2 to 3 minutes and the lag went away. It may have just been an even patch/coincidence, but I didn't want to leave OA off for very long. I made sure to make the associated executables for WoW "Trusted" in OA; I was browsing the help forums there and thought to try that.

I use OA and have no problems.

AVG is also now a resource hog. You have a bunch of stuff you don't need to run at start up or until you want to use it, even after StartupLite.

ITunes, Office both huge hogs.

MBAM current definition version is 941. Java seems to have had another update too. You need to uninstall current version via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

See, I had no lag in WoW until after I upgraded to SP3 and installed OA.

I just updated MBAM and will set a new system restore point tonight after work (home on a quick chow break). Please understand I'm not disputing your knowledge/experience about some of these programs, I am asking in order to better understand some of these things. When I look at the running processes, AVG and Ad-Aware seem to be using among the least amount of K.

Every system is different, I have no lag or excess usage with OA. I play Second Life on a laptop, and it's not supposed to be able to run the client. I often run two. :) I shut down everything but OA and Avira and crucial stuff of course. I was a user of AA for years until they added that service and I quit. AVG has added Link Scanner (and it's a good thing), but from what I have seen it slowed the program and is a forced install and, might be causing OA to be concerned. While OA is only doing it's job, the action from AVG scanning every link may be a conflict. Does that make sense? I'm not happy with how AVG has taken a new route with the program. If you didn't pay for it I would uninstall and try another AV that is more on the cutting edge of detection and elimination. Avira or Avast both are free. It could also be something in SP3 causing the new lag. I don't see anything malware in the logs. You are symptom free? MBAM has updated several times since your last scan and it does often update 4 times a day. You always need to update it prior to a scan. The only other sort of maintenance I might recommend and I am hesitant because it can go so wrong. But a reg cleaner can help, EasyCleaner is pretty safe as long as you never use the duplicate file remover. LOL I speak from experience here, some files are meant to be duplicates.

Sorry it's been a few days since I last replied. This whole mess is wearing me down. I went to the site you recommended.

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. This starts the Registry Editor. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

\SOFTWARE

\Microsoft

\Windows

\CurrentVersion

\Uninstall

\<Program Name>

I have no Uninstall folder/directory.
