Recent Infection

Recommended Posts

Recently I had an infection on my pc. Called itself Malware Protector 2008. I think I'm clean now, but wanted to run it by the gurus here. I am a relative newb at security at this point, have no issues admitting it. Below is a hjt log. One thing that I was concerned about, because during the "attack" I attempted to run spybot s&d to route it out if I could, and the PC rebooted. I'm concerned that something may've snuck into the bootsector, and I'm paranoid about keyloggers. Spybot did catch some stuff, and I got rid of all visible reg entries, files and folders that I could locate. Please review and any advice is very much appreciated. Oh, and I've added a little more protection since the attack, so don't be alarmed if it got past something that it shouldn't have.

I'll refrain from bogging it down with a repost of the hjt log.

D'oh, ok here's the updated hjt log. No worries, patience is something I've been blessed with in large volumes, lol. I hope your travels are fruitful and find you safely back home. I'm avoiding using the box for anything sensitive in the meantime.

OK, I am not going til Thursday now. How are you running? Let's do another scan with updated MBAM. Post that log.

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

You also need to do Windows updates.

Consider this in regards to Ask Jeeves .

Ok, I updated to the newest version of Java, without going with the beta version. I ran the windows updates. And actually avast found a new version that I updated. It found something in my bootsector WIN32:CTX or something like that. I know there is an issue with Panda displaying unencrypted virus definitions that can cause issues with avast regarding that particular infection, but it found both the file within panda and another that was actually infected it seems. The PC itself has been running fairly stable. Here's the updated Log you requested.

I'm feeling pretty good about it at this point, only concerns are just fear of keyloggers and that network port that won't work anymore

Interesting. I went through the updates that the updater had collected for me. I'll look into in more intesively and get it 100% up to date. I'm actually going to be out of town for a couple of days myself. I will be in touch with someone in the house that will be able to look over information posted if you send any updates before i get back. Thank you very much for your time thus far.
