vundo behavior

Recommended Posts

Thank you for considering my post. On 4/7/10, an MBAM scan detected the Vundo Trojan, and quarantined/deleted a bunch of stuff. All subsequent MBAM full scans on 4/7 and 4/8 have come back clean. McAfee and Avira also detect nothing. However, Vundo-like symptoms still remain, including: (1) MBAM unable to update; (2) MS Windows Update website unable to load; (3) Yahoo mail unable to send out email; (4) google redirect, esp. for search results pertaining to combating malware; (5) unable to post to Malwarebytes forum from the infected computer; (6) System Restore (from earlier checkpoint) fails. I have cut and paste into this post the original MBAM log that found Vundo, the latest MBAM log that comes back clean, and DDS log.

Hello grayrhombus! Welcome to MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install any software or hardware, while work on.

Step 1:

Go into C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and you will see a file called mbam.exe Right click on it and drop down to Rename change the name to firefox.com From mbam.exe to firefox.com . Please, restart your computer.

Step 2:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log

* a new fresh DDS log

Thank you so much for your reply. I should have noted that the MBAM scans posted earlier were ALREADY executed using a renamed version of mbam.exe. I had renamed it with a random-sounding filename -- you'll see it under "Running Processes" in my prior DDS log in the MB directory.

So now I've renamed the already-renamed file to firefox.com, and followed your directions. I've pasted in the logs you requested. Sorry if this is a wasted back-and-forth -- I should have clarified earlier that I'd done the renaming.

Your database version is 3953 , but the current is 3974 , so please update it:

* MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log

* a new fresh DDS log

Hi -- Unfortunately, one of the symptoms of the infection is that MBAM can't update. (See original post for other symptoms.) The error is MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING(0,0,SHRegGetPath). Fortunately, I was a pretty regular updater prior to getting Vundo, so the version of MBAM I have isn't too far out of date... :)

First of all, you should not have more than one anti-virus program installed as they will conflict and cause problems. You have two so you need to uninstall one of them. Of the two, I would recommend keeping Avira .

Step 1:

Please uninstall the following applications:

Adobe Reader 7.0.8

McAfee SecurityCenter

After finish our work, please download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from:

http://www.adobe.com

Step 2:

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Step 3:

I also see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Step 4:

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* JavaRa log

* HijackThis log (new)

Wow, I didn't realize I had a bunch of old Java S/W on my PC. I've followed the steps you've given (though for now I uninstalled Avira instead of McAfee -- I'll reevaluate after we're done). Logs are attached.

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

The MBAM update still does not work; same error code. (Quick scan returns clean.) HOWEVER, for the first time, I tried to go to the MS Windows update website, and it loaded. (I didn't actually try to download the updates yet though.) I went to google and typed in some search phrases that in the past had "annoyed" the virus (like a search for atapi.sys), and so far at least, it seems like the google redirect problem may be gone. I can send emails from my Yahoo! account with keywords in the body of the email that in the past made the emails unsendable. And I am sending this post to the MB Forum from the infected computer ... which if it works, will also be a first since 4/7/10.

So what next, Borislav? Seems like we're close? Should I download a fresh copy of MBAM?

  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or post to ask and we'll explain how to do it.

The MBAM install and update were successful! :) The Quick Scan comes back clean (log pasted below). I've installed the updates for Windows as well now. It appears that the other symptoms are not present any more as well. Thank you for all your amazing help! I'll stick you if you think we should do more?

Good work! :o I think we're ready! :)

Some final steps:

Step 1:

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Step 2:

Please manually delete JavaRa ; DDS ; mbam-clean.exe ;

Step 3:

Some malware preventions:

Done. Honestly, I can't believe you're doing this on a volunteer basis. It's quite an amazing service. A few final questions before I let you go:

1 - What about Java? Should I download the latest version, or are the security vulnerabilities such that I should just avoid it altogether from now on?

2 - Should I rename mbam.exe to something else as standard practice? From reading the forum, it seems like a lot of viruses delete this file.

3 - Lastly, do you have any opinion on the real-time "professional" version of MBAM?

1 - What about Java? Should I download the latest version, or are the security vulnerabilities such that I should just avoid it altogether from now on?

We uninstall Java, because your updates were very old and vulnerable. Download the latest version from:

http://java.com/en/

2 - Should I rename mbam.exe to something else as standard practice? From reading the forum, it seems like a lot of viruses delete this file.

Your clean, so If you want can rename it back to the mbam.exe :o

3

- Lastly, do you have any opinion on the real-time "professional" version of MBAM?

Of course, I use Real-Time protection of MBAM. Amazing! MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware is designed small in size, light, simple, butt powerful. Imagine what it would be Real-Time mode, this will help you avoid many problems. I suggest you to purchase the full verison of MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware. Not much money, but gives you many opportunities. :)
