Sudden Influx of Ads on Chrome

My BrowserGuard previously did a great job block YouTube ads -- they'd play for a half second and then switch immediately to my content.  But suddenly in the last week or two, not only have ads returned, it's playing multiple, very long ads -- 2- to 6-minute ads in many cases -- and only on my Chrome browser!  And where they previously would offer a "skip ads" link after about 5 seconds, there's no getting past them at all on Chrome.  

To make it weirder, when I turn BrowserGuard's "Ads/Trackers" option off on YouTube.com, ad blocking starts to work again!

As a test, I went to the same YouTube link in Edge, and it only played one short ad, and allowed me to skip it after about 5 seconds.  And then, realizing I never turned on the BrowserGuard extension in Edge (I don't Edge much), I turned activated it, but with no real change in Edge.

What's happened to my Chrome?
