Malware nor HiJack This will work

Recommended Posts

I went thru the steps of I'm infected. This is an XP Media Edition SP 3. The computer allowed me to install Malwarebytes. However, I received an error when it tried to launch. I attempted to reboot the system. When the system came back up, the icon for Malwarebytes had changed to the generic icon and mbam.exe seems to be missing.

I installed HiJack This to get an idea what was going on. It started scanning and got to the point of display about 4 items and then closed. I tried to run again. No Luck.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I fought this too.

Before you reinstall mbam, have the program files/malwarebytes folder open and in front of everything.

Re-run the setup & as soon as you see the mbam.exe show up, highlight/copy-paste (ctrlc/ctrlv) the executable, as the virus/malware you have will delete the mbam.exe.

You will then be able to run the app (but run the 'copy of mbam.exe').

There's more to it - it's a pain. Let me know if you can run it successfully & if not, I'll post the full set of instructions that I use to get rid of those type of issues.

Please download Rkill from one of the following four links:

Rkill EXE:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe

Rkill COM:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com

Rkill SCR:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr

Rkill PIF:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.pif

Save one of those 4 onto your desktop and try to run it. If the infection blocks it, then try one of the others. After running it, please try to launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, run the update, then run the Quick Scan and remove anything it finds.

Afterwards, please follow these instructions (skipping any steps you are unable to complete) for posting in our Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs forum. If you cannot follow any of those steps, then please create a new topic in that forum explaining what happened when you tried to run each of the tools in the instructions, and the expert who helps you will be able to suggest steps to take to get the tools working.
